Addressing Vertical Orientation Issues in DALL-E 3 Image Generation

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the creative potential of DALL-E 3 and experimenting with its features daily. However, I’ve noticed an occasional issue when generating vertical (9:16) images, and I’m not using the API—just the standard interface.

Although the problem has improved over time, about 1 out of 10 images I create still ends up with the incorrect orientation. Instead of a proper vertical layout, the images are rendered horizontally and appear as if they’ve been rotated counterclockwise. While it’s less frequent now, it’s still frustrating when it happens, as it disrupts the intended composition and wastes a generation.

I’ve tried various prompt modifications to address this, including specific instructions like:

  • “Vertical image”
  • “Portrait orientation”
  • “Ensure the image aligns with a 9:16 aspect ratio, where the height exceeds the width.”

These instructions have reduced the frequency of the issue but haven’t entirely eliminated it. Has anyone else encountered this problem recently? Any advice or insights into refining prompts or understanding the cause would be greatly appreciated!

Hi @ilan316
Welcome :people_hugging: to the community!

Is there any prompt you used, and did not use correct aspect ratio?

BTW, you can visit some topics on this forum:

Using same prompt for the last month.
Yesterday dalle broke down, 10 of 9 images are CCW.

Tried every suggestion possible.
But nothing.

You’re right, it is big challenge sometimes aspect ratio on DALL-E.

Can you provide a full prompt that displays CCW?

The laat few days were fine, but since yesterday its almost impossible to get 1 good vertical image

And it seems that openai does nothing to fix this bug
