I’d say Google is running a marketing campaign to get market share while OpenAI leverages their power as the market leader.
For what I know Gemini Pro is in the same performance range as some open source models. It’s not likely to drive adopters to a solution that can be had for very little money and with ChatGPT 3.5 being free from the outset.
