Hello OpenAI team,
I’d like to propose a feature that could significantly improve the way users interact with ChatGPT, especially during deep or research-oriented conversations.
The Problem:
When users receive a detailed answer from ChatGPT, it’s common for parts of that answer to spark follow-up questions. Currently, to ask that follow-up, the user must scroll down to the input field and type a new question. This pushes the entire conversation thread forward in a linear format, disconnecting the follow-up from the original context. As the discussion grows, users lose track of which part they were exploring, and the overall clarity suffers.
The Solution: “Micro Question Threads”
Introduce an inline feature that lets users right-click (or tap-and-hold on mobile) on a specific sentence or paragraph within ChatGPT’s response. This opens a small contextual popup or thread, where the user can ask a focused follow-up question.
ChatGPT would then respond within that micro thread, keeping the follow-up visually attached to the part of the answer it relates to.
How It Works (User Flow):
- User receives a detailed answer.
- User highlights or right-clicks a specific line or paragraph.
- A “Ask a follow-up” option appears.
- A small expandable thread opens in-place under that text.
- ChatGPT responds inline within that thread.
- Thread can be expanded, collapsed, or revisited later.
Benefits:
- Preserves local context – Questions stay visually and conceptually attached to the source of confusion.
- Reduces clutter – No need to scroll up and down or copy-paste previous content.
- Supports non-linear thinking – Especially helpful for complex topics that require branching questions.
- Encourages deeper learning – Promotes active inquiry, not just passive reading.
Ideal for:
- Students digging into complex explanations.
- Researchers exploring technical or layered topics.
- Power users, content creators, and developers who iterate and refine ideas.
Additional Suggestions for Optimal UX:
- Use visual markers (e.g., a small “?” icon) to indicate where micro questions exist.
- Allow keyboard shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl+Q) to quickly open a micro thread.
- Make threads collapsible to avoid UI clutter.
- Option to “promote” a micro-thread into the main conversation if it grows in importance.
Why This Matters:
ChatGPT is a tool for interactive reasoning, and real human reasoning is often non-linear. This feature brings ChatGPT one step closer to supporting layered, contextual, and highly personalized learning and exploration—without overwhelming the user interface or breaking the conversation flow.
Please consider experimenting with this idea, as it could meaningfully transform how people engage with AI.
Thank you for building such a powerful tool—and continuing to listen to the community!
Best regards,
Has Majetta
