I would like to suggest a feature that allows users to ask follow-up questions directly from specific paragraphs or sections of a ChatGPT response, without having to scroll all the way to the bottom of the conversation.
As someone who uses ChatGPT frequently for learning and research, I often notice that new questions come to mind while I am still reading a long response. However, the current conversation interface is mostly linear: the user asks a question, ChatGPT provides a full response, and the user can only continue the conversation from the input box at the bottom.
This creates unnecessary friction when a new question arises in the middle of reading.
Example of the Problem
For example, I recently asked ChatGPT to explain how the ozone layer forms.
Part of the response included an explanation such as:

and then explained that light energy can cause NO₂ molecules to split apart.
While reading that paragraph, I immediately had another question:
“How exactly does light energy cause a chemical bond to break?”
The problem was that I had not finished reading the original answer yet.
To ask this new question, I had to:

Proposed Feature: Inline Follow-Up Questions
I suggest adding an inline follow-up feature to individual paragraphs or response sections.
Each paragraph could have a small “+” button, chat icon, or similar interaction element beside it.
For example:
When the user clicks the “+” button, a small input box could open directly underneath that paragraph.
The user could then ask a follow-up question such as:
“How does the photon actually transfer energy to the molecule?”
ChatGPT could provide a short contextual answer directly below that paragraph, without forcing the user to leave their current reading position.
The user could then collapse the follow-up answer and continue reading the original response exactly where they left off.
Possible Interaction Design
A response could look something like this:
Paragraph 1
NO₂ can absorb light of certain wavelengths. When the molecule absorbs a photon with enough energy, one of its chemical bonds may break.
User:
How does the photon actually transfer energy to the molecule?
ChatGPT:
The photon is absorbed by electrons in the molecule. This moves the molecule into a higher-energy electronic state, which can weaken or break a chemical bond.
Paragraph 2
The oxygen atom produced in this process can then react with molecular oxygen.
Paragraph 3
This reaction can produce ozone under certain atmospheric conditions.
The key idea is that these follow-up conversations would behave like small branches attached to the relevant part of the original response.

The feature could become even more useful if users were also able to highlight a specific sentence or phrase.

Instead of every follow-up becoming a new full-sized message in the main chat, the follow-up could appear as a collapsible sub-thread connected to the paragraph where the question originated.

Follow-up questions and answers can be expanded or collapsed so that the main answer remains easy to read.
3. Automatic Context
ChatGPT automatically understands which paragraph or sentence the follow-up question refers to.
Users would not need to quote or copy the original text again.
4. Return to Reading Position
After the follow-up interaction is finished, the interface keeps the user at the same location in the original answer.
5. Optional Thread Navigation
If several follow-up questions exist within one response, small markers could allow the user to jump between them.

6. Different Depths of Follow-Up
A user could potentially create another question inside an existing follow-up thread, allowing deeper exploration without affecting the main conversation.
