I’m reporting a serious regression affecting ChatGPT message version history.
Today, August 21, 2026, I observed the following on ChatGPT Web:
1. Previously edited user messages and regenerated assistant responses lose their version arrows.
2. If I edit or regenerate a message, the normal 1/2, 2/2 controls appear again.
3. After reloading the page, those newly created arrows may also disappear.
4. Editing or regenerating again after the reload restores arrows only for versions created during that page session.
The issue is intermittent across reloads: the same conversation preserved its arrows after several reloads, then a later reload caused all existing arrows to disappear.
This affects both user-message edits and assistant-response regenerations. I have also seen the missing arrows in older conversations and in the Windows app.
There is an existing OpenAI Community thread about this issue dating back to February 20, 2026:
Several users have reported the same problem again within the last few hours.
This now affects normal use, since even newly created message versions can become inaccessible after a reload. Please investigate whether conversation reloads are failing to restore existing message-version/branch information.
After the mentioned issue occurs, the Regenerate button remains clickable but does nothing. No new response is generated. Editing the preceding user message and sending it again still works normally.
This may be related to the broader version/branch bug on my account.
I’m having the same experience. Last night it was fine, was deep in an alternative response thread and now I’ve been reverted back to a different thread and cannot move from it. I’ve tried new chats also to test, and the feature will work in new responses momentarily until I refresh, and even the new chat with one message will not show the alternative response. If anyone finds a way for me to find contents, please share.
It happened earlier this year but now it happened again and even worse. My God what even is going on?? Plus about a week ago, suddenly the arrows for first prompts were gone too for every single chat.
Got my data export. Threads weren’t visible in the html file. Uploaded the .json into Sol any referenced what to search for, recovered everything. I uploaded probably 6 .json conversations at once, took two mins. So don’t fear, at least it’s recoverable.

Not a permanent fix, but a temporary one.
Good news, your try again responses are still there. Theyre just inaccessible. Except! I found a way around it.
For some reason, if you have an image in the thread, going through your library brings them back temporarily, at least on mobile web browser.
So, pick a conversation you want to view your Try Again / Edited User Response, and put in a request to generate an image.
Go to your library.
Find the image that was generated, and click on “View Original Chat”
When it takes you to the chat, the arrows will reappear.
If they don’t, close the tab, reopen it, go to the library and select “View Original Chat” again.
Sometimes it works the first try. Sometimes it takes a few tries. But I’ve done this with four separate conversations and was able to access my arrows again.
Just know if the page refreshes, the arrows will disappear again.
But simply repeat this procedure to get them back.
An interesting accident occured on my account today:
I attempted searching keyword(to recover the historical variants) but failed, thread remained open after a failed search-navigation attempt; many hours later, while typing in the same thread, the UI briefly froze and spontaneously navigated to the exact historical message previously targeted by Search, without any URL change; version arrows then reappeared until the next reload.
Made this account on the community board just to share that I had the same issue as well and it also happened to my second account which is my main one.
Glad I’m not the only one alone with this issue it is very staggering.
Expand the code recursively from the very top (right below !DOCTYPE html line)
Right click on the top element (the one that highlights everything you see on the page) and copy it (CTRL+C)
Open notepad and paste all the text. A long wall of text should appear.
While in notepad, CTRL+F, insert “data-turn-id-container=” and click find (in Windows’s notepad, make sure you start from the top and go down, configure the settings)
You should find something like, for example, "data-turn-id-container=“a1b2b3c4-d5e6-f7g8-h9i0-j1k2l3m4n5o6"”.
Copy the “a1b2b3c4-d5e6-f7g8-h9i0-j1k2l3m4n5o6” part (without "s) and insert it at the end of the link to your chat.
For example, your chat link currently looks like this:
Well, I can confirm that both Anoni and Villy’s methods are currently effective!
Also, I discovered that adding “?message” to the end of the original link makes the arrow reappear. You don’t have to search for any specific string. For example: chatgpt[dot]com/c/76x76gd3-sd76-kjb4-348f-34fn8998j34f?message
If you add “?message=1” instead of just “?message”, the navigation bar will be displayed directly!
Yes me too, it is a disaster for my work and writing , I always need to regenerate the answer for several times to make sure and choose the appropriate answer!
Only starting messages were having this issue a week ago and now suddenly it’s for every message. I hope this and that is fixed soon because I had some conversations with many starting messages and they’re just poof like that.
