Version switcher arrows missing

Edited-message version controls disappeared from my chats. I used to see 1/2, 2/2, or 1/5 beside edited messages, but now only copy/share/edit icons appear. A long creative writing branch appears inaccessible or overwritten. Please i dont know whether this is a UI regression and whether my previous edited branches can be restored or exposed again. i lost an entire story i was making because of this.

Welcome to the community forum, @Tommy30. I can see why this feels stressful, especially if you were using edited responses as separate story paths and now those versions seem inaccessible.

One thing that’s tripped up a few people: the message version selector (1/2, 2/5, etc.) is currently only visible on the web browser and desktop app. It doesn’t appear on the mobile apps right now, even if the edited branches still exist.

Which platform are you checking from at the moment?

  • Web browser
  • Desktop app
  • iOS / Android app

If you haven’t already, try opening the same conversation from web or desktop specifically. In some cases the branches still exist there even when mobile only shows the copy/share/edit icons.

i use both mobiel and desktop for this. normally they appear in the chat, but for some reason a bug (apparently) is causing this to happen. Which is incredibly frustrating as i use ChatGPT for personal fantasy stories. When i am back home i use the Desktop, when i am at work or someplace else i use my cellphone, both reload before use to make sure its synced properly so i can continue with my story.

I know it doenst appear on the Cellphone, that is why when i do edit on my cellphone, i know it will by synced back home on my desktop as well, and i only carefully edit parts, or simply continue as i am happy with the outcome of the chat.

Hi @Tommy30, thank you for confirming and we know how that's incredibly frustrating, especially when you’re actively continuing long-form story threads across devices. The confusing part is that edits usually do sync between desktop and mobile, so when they suddenly stop appearing correctly it definitely feels like something is off.

A few things worth trying since this can sometimes be tied to caching/session sync issues:

  • Hard refresh the page (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R) or force reload the desktop app
  • Sign out of ChatGPT and back in
  • Clear cookies/site data for chat.openai.com
  • Disable extensions/content blockers temporarily
  • Try an incognito/private window or different browser
  • Turn off VPNs, secure DNS, or security filters
  • Test on a different network/device

If it still keeps happening, the next useful step is collecting browser console logs + a HAR file with timestamps and sending those to support so the sync issue can be investigated properly.
