Body:
Since the most recent ChatGPT web update, the message version navigation arrows (the left/right arrows that appear when you edit a message) have disappeared completely.
This is not the “branch conversation” feature and not related to model retirement.
This is specifically the inline message version history UI that used to appear on any edited message.
What’s happening:
The arrows no longer appear on any edited message.
Older versions of messages still exist (they appear in search results), but the UI to access them is gone.
Because the UI is missing, long messages cannot be copied from search results.
This affects multiple browsers and devices.
Clearing cache, switching browsers, incognito mode, and hard refresh do not fix it.
This appears to be a server‑side UI regression, not a local issue.
Why this is a problem:
Users cannot access or recover previous message versions.
Long scripts or content stored in older versions are effectively locked away.
This breaks workflows that rely on iterative editing.
Request:
Please confirm whether this was an intentional removal or a UI bug, and if possible, restore the version navigation arrows or provide an alternative way to access message version history.
have the same problem too. They cannot randomly change things without any notifying. That is so annoying. I need to ask different questions and get feedback at the same context. hopefully it is a bug.
Just so we're on the same page: when we tested, we can see the message count and the arrows on the prompt, and we’re able to access the edited message through that.
Can you confirm if that’s what’s missing on your end? If so, can you also let us know if it’s happening with any specific models, and whether it’s on the web version, desktop app, or both?
I am facing this issue as well, but it looks like random happens at some account, not every account have this problem, I have one account missing arrows and message count, one normal.
I’ve been experiencing the same issue for around 19 hours.
The message count and navigation arrows for regenerated responses are completely missing on my account after a streaming error.
It appears to be account-specific, since another account (Free plan) still has the feature.
I’ve been talking to support and apparently that was never an official feature, just something they were experimenting with. And even if the feature gets brought back to the accounts that lost it, you won’t be able to access your old edits, so that’s great
Same problem here. It was working fine this morning and then just suddenly the arrows disappeared. I really hope this gets fixed because this is not only such a frustrating update, but it’s also literally useless as well
That’s ludicrous. The feature has existed in ChatGPT for years and is present in all the other flagship LLM chat interfaces; Grok, DeepSeek, Claude, you name it.
To say the feature was never official and merely something experimental would be to say the ability to chat in a browser or use English language was merely an incidental, undocumented feature subject to being dropped without notice.
It’s not only not plausible, it’s an idea so far removed from the realm of the possible as to approach lunacy.
