Unjustly account terminations because of "suspicious activities"?

This morning I received an email from openAI that my ChatGPT account is terminated because of suspicious activities. I am completely unaware of anything I did wrong. I have already contacted support via the chat.

However, I am starting to think this might be some kind of error on openAI’s side. On Reddit, I already found multiple other people experiencing the exact same issue. All very recently, within the last couple of hours.

Therefore I am posting here, asking if there is anything going on?

Currently, there are 5 (6 including myself) other people experiencing this same problem. We all got the same email, and all of us are completely unaware of any wrong doing. All terminations happened at around the same time.
Take a look here on Reddit: r/ChatGPT - "ChatGPT - Account termination because of “suspicious activities” "

And these are only the people who opened reddit and replied of course, there are likely many others.

This makes me think there is something going on at OpenAI, I hope it gets resolved quickly.

I´m facing the exact same problem as you.

They refund the money and I tried to subscribe with a new account but my credit card is denied.

I have the same problem. My account got terminated for no reason today.

At the same time I got two emails each one with an invoice and a refund attachment for my first and last month of my subscription. Checked my credit card and they really refunded twice, makes no sense. I think the error is on their side.

I have the exact same experience.

First, I noticed that ChatGPT wasn’t behaving properly on my smartphone, then I realized that I couldn’t log in, and then I noticed that I had received an email from OpenAI.

It was a little before 2023/10/18 9:00am in Japan time, so around 00:00 UTC, or 2023/10/18 17:00 in California.

The content of the email is as follows

You are receiving this email because we have identified suspicious activity on your account. In order to protect our platform, we have refunded and You will no longer have access to the ChatGPT Plus service.

When I finally checked, I noticed that I no longer have any access to both ChatGPT and the OpenAI platform.

I was able to access the support chat and explained the process there.
After a while, I saw a photo icon that looked like someone was viewing it, but it disappeared a short time later.

It may be multi-posting to post on Discord and then post here as well, but I’m going to post here as well to share the situation and see how it progresses.

I apologize for any awkwardness in my English, as it is not my native language and I am using the help of DeepL and other GPT-4-derived translation services.

An additional message was received from the support team.

Thank you for reaching out to us. We’ve confirmed this action was associated with suspicious payment activity. We are unable to reinstate your account at this time; we will investigate further. Please reach out if you can provide any additional information.

If I send additional information to support individually, won’t they understand the context?

I don’t know what OpenAI’s support team meant about suspicious payment activity, so I don’t know what information to provide.

I got the same message with the suspicious payment activity. I sent them the invoices and refund (which I never requested) documents and the payment history of my openai account.

My advice is to send them the information that you didn’t terminate your account and there were no payment issues in the past. At least it is documented and you may get a detailed explanation what happened.

I’ve noticed something.

The credit card they refunded the ChatGPT Plus fee to is the one registered for the OpenAI API usage fee, not the one registered for the ChatGPT Plus usage fee.

I have designated the API usage fee to a business credit card, separate from the ChatGPT.

The reason is that while I consider the ChatGPT Plus fee for private use, the API fee also serves for learning and research purposes. Therefore, I have set it up to bill the API fee to a business credit card and the ChatGPT Plus fee to a private credit card.

This should be nothing strange as the payment for ChatGPT Plus is made by an agency called stripe, completely independent from the OpenAI platform.

I got the same issue. I do not know what I did wrong. And also I got refunds of two separate period. One is for April, and the other is for October. I used the same purchase information for over months, so I cannot get the problem.

I also, received the exact same support message. I have my credit card linked to my OpenAI API account as well, so maybe it has something to do with users having both ChatGPT Plus, as well as an API account. For me, it is the same credit card.

I replied to the support message asking if they can provide more information, and offered to provide any information they might need to resolve the issue. Lets wait and see.

I also had my account terminated with the same message. I don’t have api access as far as I know. I’ve never used it.

I have the same problem. Same emails, same refunding of 2 invoices, same reply from support. Something is wrong with them and they need to fix this asap, because I use it for my work and they are just killing me.

Based on the “this action is related to suspicious payment activity” notice, I have sent additional information and documentation to the best of my ability to prove that my payment activity is not suspicious.

I will now await additional communication from support.

I will report the results here at that time when I see progress on this issue, as I think it will be helpful to other forum members.

The support team will do their best to investigate and respond if the user is not involved in the fraud they have reported.

Also, as disparate information is of no use to other members, I would prefer to share as much information as possible in the same thread.

My account got terminated for the same reason I believe, except I cancelled my Plus subscription months ago. Both cards are in my own name too. Why can’t we use two different cards OpenAI? Hopefully our accounts get reinstated.

Got terminated 2 days ago too :frowning: no idea why… I got the same “payment” explanation. Really hope this gets fixed ;(

Same issue. It got terminated out of nowhere on Thursday and I got the same message. I think someone at OpenAI screwed up big time.

Add me as well to the list.
Payment suspicion reason.
I have been using my own credit card for years at other places never had issue.
Agree someone did some coding wrong. I believe there ll be alot more subscribers like us.

Hopefully they solve this quickly

I acknowledge that OpenAI is understaffed in support, but this way of deleting accounts with only a one-sided notice is unacceptable.
Emotional arguments do not produce anything.
Therefore, I wish to see some useful information gathered to help resolve the issue.
That is why we are here.

I had the same issue, my account suddenly got terminated on Thursday (exactly the same day) and I received the same message “suspicious payment activity”. I sent them an email back to provide any documents/receipts/proof about bank payments whatever is necessary from my side in order to reinstate and have been waiting for a solution since Thursday.

I have been using my own credit card for years and never had an issue. I also believe that there are a lot more subscribers like us.

Hopefully, they solve this issue quickly, or at least they reinstate the accounts for a temporary time in order to allow users to download their prompt history, lots of prompts, and data there… lots of invested time and search were suddenly wasted :frowning:

With this attitude, OpenAI is going down. Except their models, they are a terrible company, and I don’t see them survive unless Microsoft acquired them. GPT-4 got much dumber, they don’t have ANY customer support, they kick people out, deleting their data ( I had chats where I spent hours to produce things that I needed for my work, now it’s gone…). They cannot sustain their business model, so the future is with Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and the other big fish who have the infrastructure and the money to operate LLM’s. I already switched to Bard and I am pretty happy with his performance FREE OF CHARGE.
