I would like to see the main ChatGPT window evolve into a permission-based AI computer console and Task Manager, rather than functioning mainly as a scrolling conversation.
The conversation could remain central, but ChatGPT would also become a user-authorized operating layer for the computer itself. With explicit permission, it could work across applications, files, websites, and connected services on the user’s behalf while keeping the owner in control.
With the appropriate permissions, ChatGPT could:
- Open and switch between applications
- Manage files and folders
- Rename, move, organize, upload, and download files
- Work across websites and connected services
- Complete repetitive workflows
- Track active, queued, paused, and completed tasks
- Resume work exactly where it stopped
- Handle approved posting and publishing workflows
- Coordinate several applications as part of one task
- Show progress and identify anything requiring attention
- Ask for approval before sensitive or irreversible actions
The main ChatGPT window could function as an AI Task Manager, showing what ChatGPT is currently doing, what is queued, what has finished, what is paused, and what requires user approval.
There is already substantial unused space around the central conversation in the current ChatGPT interface. Rather than replacing the chat, that space could become part of the computer console. Panels around the conversation could display active tasks, queued work, progress indicators, files, approvals, warnings, reminders, connected-app status, and completed work.
Those panels could appear only when useful and collapse when the user wants a clean traditional chat interface. The conversation would remain the central control point while the surrounding space provides a visual overview of everything ChatGPT is managing.
ChatGPT could also act as an early-warning system for the computer owner. While performing authorized work, it could notice potential problems the user may not be aware of, such as failed uploads, conflicting settings, low storage, suspicious activity, account problems, duplicate files, broken workflows, missed steps, expired subscriptions, or other conditions that could cause trouble.
Instead of silently continuing, ChatGPT could explain what it detected, estimate how serious the problem is, recommend a solution, and request permission before making sensitive corrective changes.
The permissions should be granular and completely under the user’s control. A user could decide which applications, folders, websites, accounts, devices, and types of actions ChatGPT is allowed to access. Permissions could be temporary or permanent and could be revoked at any time.
The goal would be for ChatGPT to become more than an assistant sitting inside a browser window. With the owner’s permission, it could become the intelligent control layer for the computer—operating the system, managing ongoing work, watching for problems, and showing everything through one central AI console while the user remains in charge.
