Thinking effort selector missing in ChatGPT for macOS

Hello, there is a long-standing bug on ChatGPT for macOS where selecting the reasoning effort of models is not possible because it doesn’t appear. This is however possible on ChatGPT web and ChatGPT iOS/Android. This is a major issue as every time I want to tweak the reasoning effort I need to switch to ChatGPT web, making the ChatGPT macOS app very inconvenient.

I attached five screenshots to show the issue:

-- The first two screenshots are from the desktop app ChatGPT for macOS and you can see that it’s missing the reasoning effort selector. It’s missing from both the Pro and the Thinking models.

-- The two next screenshots are from ChatGPT web and you can see that it’s possible to choose the thinking effort. The option also appears in ChatGPT for iOS so it’s really a bug specific to ChatGPT for macOS.

Could you fix this? This problem has been happening for months, maybe a year.

Thank you

I’m using ChatGPT 1.2026.104 on macOS Tahoe 26.4.1 (25E253).

This is the main reason I avoid using the ChatGPT MacOS app. I prefer to manually select the thinking effort for most queries and not being able to do so in the app is a downside for me.

This dropdown has never been present in the app, why is that? Is it intentional, to “guide” people towards the “Auto” option? Seems like an easy fix, why is no one considering it?

Please, OAI team, add it on the list of future improvements :folded_hands: :folded_hands: :folded_hands: ! Thank you!

@ciprian_cimpan You can send an email to support@openai.com to request this feature. They requested additional information from me (logs from the desktop app among other things) and I don’t have the time to provide them unfortunately… But if you could it would be amazing! Thanks a lot

Why is this feature missing? It’s available for iOS, web, and even Windows. Is the Mac app being discontinued? This is absurd.
