The web version of ChatGPT keeps crashing!

I’m reposting this topic because for some reason it has been closed.
The problem has NOT been solved. ChatGPT still reaches insane levels of memory consumption, making it absolutely unusable on large discussions.

I can wait a couple of minutes before having an answer, when it doesn’t crash my browser altogether.

I understand that this is an ongoing problem, but this has not been fixed so there was really no reason to close that topic.

"I use ChatGPT on the Chrome mobile app, and ever since a few hours ago I’ve been getting the “Aw, Snap” error message every 2-3 generations. Now, if I wait before I refresh it, it completes the generation, but it’s still irritating to have to deal with it this often, especially since it means I have to keep opening my custom GPT again, because editing my input after a refresh overwrites previous generations. (I like to generate 15-20 “edits” with my custom GPT before I start fresh.)

I also tried it with Opera, and it crashed on my second generation, so it’s not browser specific. Is anyone else experiencing this?

The official ChatGPT app is terrible, by the way, so don’t suggest that."

this is something that I am afraid off, my chat crashing due to along discussion. I am using chatgpt as a sort of mentor in my studies to explain ideas to me but as I continue to message chatgpt it takes longewr for the actual chat to open and for chatgpt to respond

Web version using Chrome on Windows with 64GB RAM is crashing for me also.

Edit… I’ve confirmed why the crash happens… it happens where there is “too much” or “too many” questions and answers inside a single left hand chat topic.

Creating a new topic on left menu stops the crashing.

Yeah it’s really bad but so far it didn’t “delete” my chats when crashing, so you can (painfully) extract the relevant info and have it compile in a PDF to feed to the next GPT, but it’s far than a perfect fix.

Can someone at @OpenAI_Support check this out ? This is absolutely infuriating.
Conversations now start crashing after just a few hours of use, rendering the entire thing completely unusable.

Starting a new conversation every 5 hours simply isn’t a viable solution to this mess.

Then the whole page becomes white and it takes around 5-10 minutes before painfully unfreezing, often uncovering the laziest, half baked answer… Worst case scenario, it just cuts the answer after 10 minutes. But clearly, this is completely unusable as is.

Yes, this is still happening to me as well! Crashing on the simplest prompts. Why are we paying for a service that is unusable! We can’t even contact support WTF! I use this for business and if it doesn’t get resolved soon I will need to move to Anthropic or another platform - this is not on! I’ve been a loyal customer for nearly 2-years. It has been a week now. Very upsetting.

[edit : it’s also a piece of shit and a nightmare, keeps crashing and lazying out]
If that’s an option for you, try installing ChatGPT for desktop (bypass Microsoft’s disgusting appstore Download ChatGPT Desktop App 2025.131.204.0 | TechSpot ) and try using that. It seems to crash less, to some capacity.

It won’t fix the answer delay if you have a really big conversation (understandable), but at least your browser will be usable in the meantime, so that’s a win. However ;

BE FOREWARNED THOUGH !!! There are fckups and trouble may (will?) happen, In my case, opening and talking to both Web and Desktop versions created some synchronisation conflict, which nuked 4 hours worth of discussion that I was not able to get back, which basically ruined a day worth of work.

Not sure how or if I could replicate the issue and frankly I don’t want to, but be forewarned and do backups. Good luck.

HELLO ??? THIS IS STILL A CRIPPLING ISSUE YOUR PRODUCT IS UNUSABLE !
Anyone here ???

YEah that’s true.
Problem with the desktop app is that I have had a sync issue where 4 hours of work disappeared from my discussion altogether and it cost me a day to figure everything back.

Once this happens to you, you become very cautious with that desktop app :skull::skull:
Also, I manage to crash it quite often, the errors are not the same but it does crashes often.

So I still have to deal with the web version, which still crashes the hell out of web browsers. Just hangs half sentence (that one took 10 minutes to unfreeze and give the answer)

This issue still exist in my browser. Chatgpt tab using approximately 1gb memory and crashes webpage
