I would like to request that the ability to change your email address without loosing my current Chatgbt account be added in the near future to Openai
I’ll add my voice to this request. I’ve read through several posts on this topic and (think I) understand the rationale behind being unable to change my email address. However, it would be a beneficial feature. Email addresses come and go with work and life transitions. Cheers!
I don’t understand the rationale behind the fixed email address.
My situation: I got rid of a domain whose email address I used for registering at ChatGPT. Now I have no way to log in anymore. I have a valuable chat history I need to get to :-0
Yes, this is hugely frustrating. I am going to lose so much information just because I am moving to a new email address. Please could this be prioritised.
As a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, this restriction is unacceptable, especially for a company of OpenAI’s scale.
What’s wrong:
You cannot change your account email. You must create a new account—and lose chat history, subscriptions, custom GPTs, and memories. This workaround is disruptive and unnecessary.
Why it makes no sense:
Changing email is basic SaaS functionality—every major platform supports it.
How OpenAI can fix it:
- Verify identity via old/new email + 2FA
- Migrate data: chat history, subscriptions, custom GPTs
- Record audit logs & update tracking
I consulted with ChatGPT 4o and it proposed using OpenAI’s own models to solve this issue as follows:
o3‑pro to design the secure step‑by‑step logic
GPT‑4.1 for generating production‑quality backend code and handling long-context tasks reliably
GPT‑4o to embed the code into tooling by: Reviewing the codebase, Building CLI or internal dashboard features, Using multimodal explanations or UI hooks if needed.
Codex agent - use for pull requests or CI/CD integration: Auto-generate PRs, test scaffolding, unit tests
This isn’t a feature request—it’s a fundamental account functionality. If enough users speak up (especially Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise), OpenAI may finally prioritize this.
I am echoing this development request - ability to change email address without losing history.
I signed up with a Google account related to my school account. I am no longer a student and would like to stop using that Google account as it is connected with the school. However, if I change, I will lose my history.
I see another identifier for my account that is not related to email address. This would be the preferred method to keep history attached to an account identifier over email. Email addresses are transient for many reasons. Without a warning at the beginning that your email address must be permanent, people are linking important long lasting information with temporary email addresses. Many institutional, student, or employer emails are no longer accessible once the relationship with that institution has ended. Your ChatGPT history should not be permanently linked to temporary situations. It is a major limitation of the platform.
Please consider adding the basic functionality of being able to change your email address without losing your history.
I would also like the ability to change my email address and/or phone number. This restriction is idiotic and is extremely poor customer service. I’ve been paying for a Plus account…and now my email address is changing, so I won’t be able to keep it any longer…all my hundreds and hundreds of chats and the difficult organization I’ve done is going to be completely gone and I can’t do a damned thing about it without the ability to change my email address.
