Text clears when switching between apps

I’ve found that the text entry field in the ChatGPT iOS app (tested with iPad OS + Magic Keyboard) will clear my in-progress text if I switch away from the app and switch back. This should be fairly straightforward to reproduce. Most well-behaved apps I’ve used on iOS will not clear text fields in this way. It’s a nuisance to have the field clear itself when I change apps to (for example) look up a word or a term.

To reproduce:
Start typing something into the edit text field in the ChatGPT iOS app
Use cmd-tab on keyboard to switch to another app; e.g., Safari
Use cmd-tab to return to iOS app. In-progress text is gone.

This is a really frustrating bug! Surprised there isn’t more activity on this.

How is this not fixed yet? This is awful.

Guys, is it possible to ask ChatGPT Team to fix this bug? It’s very critical, annoying and frustrated bug, I can’t work with app because of this.

I concur with the others in this thread, this is very annoying bug, which should be relatively easy to fix. Many times I completely lost the draft of a big prompt because I wanted to check something in another app, before hitting the send button. Thanks for your attention!

ChatGPT has saved me tons of time BUT I’ve also lost a lot of time because of this freaking bug! I would assume, for a company as technically proficient as OpenAI, that this is a simple fix. Please, please, please add this issue to the list for future updates. Otherwise, keep up the great work.

Came here wondering why it wasn’t fixed yet and discovered I’m already following it.

This is a high priority bug folks!

I am no longer experiencing this issue on ChatGPT for iOS 1.2025.049 (13467804450) running on an iPhone 16 Pro Max (MYWA3LL/A) running 18.3.1 (22D72).

I started a new conversation in the ChatGPT for iOS app and then proceeded to switch to a few different large apps. When I returned to the ChatGPT for iOS app the text was still there. So, I believe that this bug no longer exists in the versions I’ve described above as of 2025/03/05.

iOS seems to be fixed now, but iPadOS is still suffering from this.

I came here today to say the exact same thing. Now the issue is inflicting the iPadOS version of the app.

App Version: 1.2025.057 (13661136151)
iOS Version: iPadOS 18.3.1 (22D72)
Device Model: iPad Pro (11-inch) (4th generation) / MP553LL/A
Date: March 15, 2024
Time: Approx. 5:15 PM CST

Description:
Text entered into the ChatGPT input field disappears after the app is closed and reopened. This prevents the user from sending the intended message.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open the ChatGPT app.
  2. Type any text into the input field (e.g., “Here is some text. I will exit now. Remember this.”).
  3. Exit the ChatGPT app completely (do not leave it open, such as one would for multitasking).
  4. Reopen the ChatGPT app.
  5. Type a new message into the input field (e.g., “Where did it go?!”).
  6. GOTO Step 3 and observe that the newly typed message disappears from the input field upon relaunching the app.
(Caution: These steps will result in an infinite loop if taken too seriously.)

Expected Behavior:
The text entered in step 2 and 5 should remain in the input field upon exiting or re-entering the ChatGPT app.

Actual Behavior:
The text entered in step 2 and 5 disappears upon exiting or re-entering the ChatGPT app.

Impact:
Users cannot reliably send messages after reopening the app making multitasking from the ChatGPT app to another app an inconvenience.

Additional Information:

  • The issue seems to occur consistently.
  • The previous conversation history is preserved; only the newly typed message is lost.

Workarounds:

  • Use split screen (also Stage Manager) or have the ChatGPT in “Slide Over” mode
  • Use the ChatGPT website

Experiencing the exact same issue with the ChatGPT app on iPad, and it’s been happening as long as I’ve had the device (2 months).

Baffling that this is still an issue after it being reported so long ago. This is losing me as much time as GPT can save me.

Is there a way to tag this issue as “iPadOS app” so it’s not overlooked? It looks like iOS might have been resolved, but iPadOS clearly hasn’t.

Bumping this because this is still not resolved.
Surprising and frustrating considering the fact that the Mac app is constantly updated.

1.2025.105 (14543963632)
iPadOS 18.4.1 (22E252)

Additionally, if you scroll up midway through a conversation and switch apps, the app refreshes when you come back and automatically jumps to the bottom of the conversation, making it difficult to continue reading or referencing earlier messages.
This behavior happens consistently and disrupts the user experience.
