Suggestion: Limited Access to GPT-4 for Free Users, Full Access for Premium Users

After hearing that gpt will be transitioning to a paywall, I’d like to propose a model where GPT-4 is available in a limited version for free users instead of gpt-3.5, while premium users who subscribe would get full, unlimited access to GPT-4.

Why this could work:

Safer experience: GPT-4 is less susceptible to misuse(jailbreaks) and misinformation than GPT-3.5. Giving free users limited access to GPT-4 could provide a more reliable experience, reducing risks associated with older versions.

Balanced access: Free users still get to experience the advanced capabilities of GPT-4, but with reasonable limitations (e.g., limited queries, reduced features, or lower priority, and don’t crucify me but maybe also adds).

Incentivizing premium subscriptions: Premium users would benefit from full, unrestricted access, helping OpenAI generate revenue to fund continuous improvements.

This model strikes a balance between providing a better free experience and offering premium users full access, without sacrificing the quality and safety of interactions.

gpt-3.5-turbo has been retired from ChatGPT since it was replaced by gpt-4o-mini July 2024. Free users also get a few initial chats with gpt-4o.

It seems true that no-login ChatGPT, available since April 2024, is no more. I was unable to simply fire up chatgpt.com and talk to it, as within a second of seeing the normal page with an input box, it redirects to an authentication page. A “try it” button also just redirects to a login.

Thanks, I was looking for some confirmation about this specific issue. I’m using other AIs for no-login.

What do you mean ChatGPT is transitioning to a paywall? Where did you hear that? Free users (such as myself) already have free but limited usage of GPT-4. That’s already how it works. I looked it up and didn’t see any news about paywall change like that, but I might be missing something?!
