Hi OpenAI team,
I’m a free plan user and I’ve run into two frustrating limitations that seem unnecessarily harsh — especially when the stakes are serious.
- Let Free Users Delete Messages or Attachments to Prevent Chat Lockups
Right now, if I accidentally upload a file, or send a message that later causes a chat to lock, I have no way to fix it. This is frustrating in casual use — but it’s even worse when the chat is part of something important.
In my case, I’ve been using ChatGPT to work on a legal concern involving Nintendo’s EULA for the Switch 2 — an issue that could potentially impact an entire industry. I shared a document attachment in one chat, but now that file causes the conversation to lock whenever I try to keep working on it.
I’m asking you to allow users to delete any message or attachment from a chat, at any time, so they can continue using the conversation — especially when it involves research, advocacy, or legal matters.
- Prevent Lockups in Other Chats That Weren’t Even Active
Another issue is that if I’m having a long conversation in a text-only chat, my other chats — especially those with past attachments — suddenly become inaccessible. I didn’t even open them, but they’re locked just because I hit a usage cap elsewhere.
This doesn’t feel fair or justified.
Text-only activity shouldn’t affect unrelated chats that contain attachments from hours or days ago. If a user hasn’t touched that file, it shouldn’t count against their limits.
Fair, Abuse-Protected Solution
I get it — OpenAI needs to keep free usage under control and encourage upgrades. So here’s a balanced solution:
Let free users delete any message or attachment at any time, but limit this feature to once per 24 hours, or set a “delete quota” like the existing upload limit.
That prevents abuse, keeps the system fair, and avoids locking out serious work because of one old file.
Final Thought
This isn’t about asking for more features — it’s about avoiding situations where a serious project gets blocked because of a minor technicality or old message. A little flexibility here would make the free plan feel much more respectful and usable, without undercutting your upgrade model.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
