Study Notebooks in ChatGPT

I’m a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, and ChatGPT is by far my favorite AI assistant. I use it for all sorts of things, including studying Japanese.

However, Google’s Study Notebooks feature in Gemini is making me seriously consider using Gemini for learning Mandarin Chinese.

And the funny thing is, I really don’t want to switch.

ChatGPT is already an excellent tutor, but I think there’s a huge opportunity to turn it into a complete, personalized learning platform.

What I’d love to see

A dedicated learning environment integrated into ChatGPT, with:

  • Personalized learning paths: An initial assessment of the user’s knowledge, followed by a structured curriculum adapted to their goals.

  • Automatic progress tracking: A clear overview of mastered topics, weak areas, and skills that still need work.

  • Adaptive lessons: Exercises that dynamically adjust based on mistakes and performance.

  • Spaced repetition: Automatic reviews of previously learned material to improve long-term retention.

  • Learning materials: The ability to upload textbooks, PDFs, notes, and other resources and incorporate them into lessons.

  • Seamless conversations: The freedom to interrupt a lesson, ask questions, explore related topics, and then resume without losing progress.

  • Long-term learning context: ChatGPT should remember what a student has actually mastered, not just what has been discussed.

Why this matters to me

I’m learning Japanese and would like to start Mandarin Chinese as well.

Ideally, I’d have two separate learning spaces in ChatGPT, each with its own curriculum, materials, progress tracking, and revision schedule.

Right now, I can organize conversations using Projects and learn interactively with ChatGPT, but I still have to manage most of the learning process myself.

I want an AI tutor that doesn’t just explain things brilliantly, but also knows what I need to learn next, what I’m struggling with, and what I’m about to forget.

Why I think this is a huge opportunity

Traditional tutoring can cost as much as an entire monthly AI subscription for a single lesson.

An AI-powered learning platform could make personalized education dramatically more accessible, allowing people to practice every day, ask unlimited questions within their plan’s usage limits, and learn at their own pace.

ChatGPT already has much of the underlying technology. What’s missing is a structured educational experience that brings everything together.

Google seems to be moving in this direction with Gemini Study Notebooks.

Please bring something similar — or even better — to ChatGPT.

I genuinely prefer ChatGPT, and I’d love to keep all my learning here rather than splitting it between competing platforms.

Please steal the idea from Gemini. I’m literally begging you. :sob:

And thank you for making ChatGPT such an amazing learning companion in the first place!
