I’d like to request the ability to enable Study Mode inside ChatGPT Projects, ideally as a per-conversation toggle.
I’m a ChatGPT Plus user and a Psychology undergraduate student in Brazil. I completed four years of a five-year Psychology degree before temporarily pausing my studies, and I’m now using ChatGPT to continue learning while preserving and expanding what I studied at university.
I’m building a long-term learning environment around Psychology, with a particular interest in connecting the field to AI, technology, organizational psychology, learning, and human-AI interaction.
Study Mode is extremely valuable for this because of its Socratic questioning, guided reasoning, comprehension checks, and active-learning approach.
The problem is that Study Mode and Projects currently solve two complementary parts of the same learning workflow, but cannot be used together.
Projects provide:
- persistent subject-specific context
- project instructions
- files and reference material
- multiple organized conversations
- continuity across months of work
Study Mode provides:
- pedagogical structure
- Socratic questioning
- active recall
- comprehension checks
- guided learning instead of simply generating answers
For short study sessions, keeping Study Mode outside Projects may be manageable. For long-term learning, however, it creates significant fragmentation.
If I create multiple standalone Study Mode chats, they eventually become mixed with unrelated conversations. Starting a new Study chat also means losing the deliberately bounded curriculum, materials, learning objectives, and previous work that exist inside the Project.
General account memory is not an equivalent solution. A long-term learner may have many conversations touching similar subjects for completely different purposes. A Project provides an intentional boundary around a specific learning program.
In my case, I want a dedicated Psychology learning Project containing my university notes, curriculum, research, knowledge gaps, specialized topics, and multiple study tracks. I would then like to activate Study Mode only in the conversations where I am actively learning.
A simple implementation could be:
Project → New conversation → toggle Study Mode on/off
The entire Project would not need to behave as Study Mode. Individual conversations could opt into it while retaining the Project’s files, instructions, and contextual continuity.
I believe this would benefit many use cases beyond mine:
- university degree subjects
- language learning
- programming curricula
- mathematics
- medicine
- law
- certification preparation
- academic research
- long-term professional development
The product fit seems especially strong:
Projects provide continuity, scope, files, instructions, and organization. Study Mode provides pedagogy. Combining them could turn Projects into genuinely persistent learning environments.
I already use tools such as NotebookLM for source-based study, but most of my research, projects, and learning workflows are centered in ChatGPT. I also prefer the reasoning and interactive learning experience of OpenAI models, so being able to keep this workflow inside ChatGPT would make a substantial difference.
I’d be happy to provide more detail about the workflow, screenshots, or participate in user research if this is an area the team is exploring.
Thanks for your continuous support!
