Can you please add a sidebar for tangent questions so I don’t have to muck up my main conversation with ChatGPT with clarifications and side quests I am losing my mind trying to investigate complex topics without this. Please see picture

The idea of a dedicated sidebar for tangents makes sense, especially for complex research-style workflows where you want to preserve the main thread. Appreciate you both raising this. This is such a necessity, and something I’ve felt has been a limitation for years. Maybe even just give the ability to highlight text and engage in a little disposable tangent conversation for small clarifications and such, that goes away permanently when you’re done, if you guys want to avoid adding complexity to each chat? What’s the potential and timeline for a feature add like this?

I’d like to suggest a study-focused feature for ChatGPT: a dedicated side-question panel or quick-ask drawer.
When studying in a long chat, small side questions naturally come up. The problem is that asking them in the main chat pushes the current lesson or explanation out of view, which breaks continuity. Then I have to scroll back up to find where I was, and scroll back down again to continue. Opening a separate chat for every side question is cumbersome and slows the workflow.
What would help is a built-in side panel for quick detour questions. The main chat should stay visually in place while the side panel handles short, secondary questions. That way, users can ask for a quick clarification, definition, syntax check, or comparison without disrupting the main study thread.
A major part of this is contextual awareness without pollution. The side panel should be able to see the main thread so it understands what the user is referring to, but its own question-and-answer history should not automatically get written into the main chat’s ongoing context. Right now, if a side question is added directly into the main thread, the AI starts carrying that detour forward, which can blur or weaken its focus on the primary lesson. In other words, the user wants the side panel to have read-only access to the main thread for context, without polluting the main thread’s memory unless the user explicitly chooses to keep something.
Ideal behavior would be:

a “Pin to Main” or similar button lets the user deliberately bring a useful side answer into the main timeline
This would solve both a visual problem and a context-management problem. Visually, it preserves the user’s place in the lesson. Technically, it prevents the assistant from over-absorbing every detour and losing sharpness on the main objective.
In practice, many users are already trying to create this behavior manually by opening a second AI model or a second window for side questions. That workaround makes sense because it effectively separates two mental spaces: one model stays hot on the primary topic, while the other remains a cleaner space for definitions, clarifications, and small detours. A built-in side-question feature would simply automate that separation in a much smoother and more intentional way.
This would be especially useful for students, researchers, and anyone working through long-form learning sessions. Not every question belongs in the main timeline. A lot of interruptions are just quick clarifications, and they should be handled in a way that preserves both continuity and contextual precision.
This summarizes a ton of my pain points! Having the context of the chat without the UI issue of seperating the question at the top of the thread and the answer at the bottom of the chat. Not to mention a ton of my questions are just simple follow ups.
Tried to solve it with this chrome extension (SideNote) incase its solves your problems! Lets you open a side chat without affecting the main chat and makes it easy to reference them if you come back to the chat
Hopefully OpenAI makes it into an actual feature eventually too!
