I would like to suggest a ChatGPT feature: an “Ask About This” sidebar or small clarification panel.
When ChatGPT gives a long technical response with many sections, equations, or definitions, users often do not understand one small part of the answer. Currently, the only way to ask about it is to send a new message in the main chat. This interrupts the logic of the original conversation and often produces a long new answer, even when the user only needs a short 1–2 sentence clarification.
My suggestion is to let users highlight a word, sentence, paragraph, equation, or section and ask a focused question in a small side panel or pop-up. The answer should be short by default and should stay connected to the selected text. It should not change the main conversation unless the user chooses to continue from that clarification.
Example:
If ChatGPT explains a machine learning architecture and includes an equation, the user could highlight one symbol and ask: “What does this mean?” The answer would appear in the side panel, without derailing the main thread.
This would be useful for learning, academic papers, coding, engineering, mathematics, and long explanations. It would make ChatGPT feel more like an interactive textbook or tutor and would keep the main chat cleaner.
