Set Chat Title in the prompt

Auto Naming Chat Titles should be an option - - we should be able to in the first prompt Set Title – by saying chat title: “Chat Title” or have another input and if it is blank, Chat auto set the Title

something like that

I always have to open Sidebar - click on 3 dots - rename the chat for what i want,

This is exactly the behavior I need too, especially when using ChatGPT Projects for structured research.

I regularly create sets of threads with intentional names like:

00 Research Control Room
01 Product & Technical Landscape
02 Patent & Claim Landscape

I already put the desired thread title explicitly in the first prompt, but ChatGPT ignores it and generates its own title anyway.

This seems like it should be a very simple rule for the existing title generator: if the user explicitly provides a thread title in the opening prompt, use that title verbatim. Otherwise, generate one automatically like it does today.

There’s also an annoying race condition where you can manually rename a new thread immediately, then the automatic title generator runs afterward and replaces the title you just chose. A user-entered title should always take precedence over an automatically generated one.

For people using Projects as an actual organized workspace, thread titles aren’t just cosmetic—they’re part of the information architecture. Having the system replace intentional names with generic generated ones makes large projects considerably harder to manage.

Would really like to see:

  • Explicit title in first prompt → use it

  • Manual rename → treat it as authoritative

  • Never auto-overwrite a user-set title

  • Keep automatic naming as the fallback when no title was supplied

This would make structured Projects dramatically easier to manage.

It’s crazy that we don’t have this yet.

Thanks for explaining this! We’ll pass along the request to honor titles in the first prompt and preserve manual names. If a manual rename is still being overwritten, please contact Support with a redacted example: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6614161. No timeline to share.
