Request:
Please add a feature to allow users to manually set and lock a conversation title so that it doesn’t auto-update or get overwritten by ChatGPT’s dynamic title generator.
Use Case:
For structured, long-term projects — such as writing a book, managing chapters, or organizing multi-part research — users need consistent, predictable conversation titles to easily reference and sort threads. Auto-renaming interferes with project organization, especially when naming threads with specific section identifiers (e.g., “Section A.01.Title Page”, “Section B.01.Chapter One”).
Why This Matters:
- Manually named threads currently get renamed based on message content, even when the user clearly sets a title at the start.
- There’s no way to prevent this or force the system to respect a user-defined title.
- This creates confusion, especially when working with 10+ structured threads under a naming convention.
Proposed Solution:
Add a lock icon or toggle when renaming a conversation, labeled something like:
“Lock this title (prevent automatic changes)”
This would be a small change, but hugely helpful for anyone managing multi-threaded work like:
- Books and reports
- Software documentation
- Research projects
- Meeting records
Example from a user:
“If I want a fixed thread name then give me the ability to set it and do not rename it.”
Well, I came here to say the same thing. Asked ChatGPT to write me my little post and then I searched for similar posts. So here I’am. But can’t refrain myself of publishing my lovely post. So here it goes…
I’d like to request support for renaming conversations in the desktop/Atlas (ChatGPT browser) client.
On the regular web ChatGPT interface, being able to rename threads is essential for keeping conversations organized by topic or project. In the desktop/Atlas client, there doesn’t seem to be a way to rename a conversation, which makes it difficult to manage multiple ongoing technical threads (for example: different experiments, debugging sessions, or long-term projects).
My use case:
- I keep several parallel conversations for different topics (e.g. one for server configuration, another for performance tuning, another for security scans, etc.).
- On the web UI I can give each thread a meaningful name, which turns ChatGPT into a sort of “knowledge base” I can revisit.
- In the desktop/Atlas client, the lack of renaming makes it harder to quickly find and reuse the right conversation.
It would be great to have:
- The ability to rename conversations directly in the desktop/Atlas client, or
- At least full sync of conversation titles with the web UI, so titles edited on the web appear correctly in the desktop client.
If this is already possible and I’m missing the option, I’d really appreciate a pointer. Otherwise, I hope this can be considered for a future update, as it would make the desktop client much more practical for users who work with many ongoing threads.
Thanks for reading.
I have the same issue. I’m managing a lot of my conversations in Projects. And apparently inside Projects, you’re not even able to rename a thread at all.
One of my projects is a place to track research and descriptions of interviews I’m conducting. I currently have around 50+ threads inside that project.
It’s completely random if the ChatGPT-generated name gives me any idea what’s inside. Sometimes the generated name includes the guest’s name, but many times it just says something like “Interview prep research”. OMG! All of them are interview prep research. This naming is completely useless.
Anyway, thanks for raising and I hope it gets some attention from developers!
Seems like we are only 3 reclaiming this. Are we loosing something? A way to lock thread names?
Have pretty much same issue handling multiple standard requests under projects.
I need a way to distinguish between the chats.
Hey Aleksey_Vyazovsky, that's indeed frustrating.
I'll flag this to the engineering team so they can review it and determine whether it can be implemented.
