Let chat titles update as the conversation evolves

One small thing that would make ChatGPT much easier to use over time:

Let chat titles update themselves when a conversation clearly becomes more specific.

For example, I might start a chat with:

“I’m thinking about buying a car.”

The initial title might be something like “Buying a new car,” which makes sense at the beginning.

But after a long discussion, we may have narrowed it down to electric cars, compared several models, and eventually spent most of the conversation discussing a Ford EV.

At that point, “Buying a new car” is no longer a very useful title.

Something like “Choosing a Ford electric car” would make that conversation much easier to find later.

I’m not suggesting that titles should change after every message. Maybe ChatGPT could update the title only when the topic has clearly evolved, or suggest a better title and let the user accept it.

Even better, make it an optional setting:

“Automatically keep chat titles up to date”

Manual renaming should still stay available.

The current title usually describes how a conversation started. It would be much more useful if it could also describe what the conversation actually became.

For people with hundreds of chats, this would make history a lot easier to search and manage.

You can rename chats manually in the current interface: https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/projects. We’ll pass on the idea of optional title updates or suggestions as a conversation becomes more specific. No timeline to share.
