Salted Code: The Double-Edged Sword of Copyright Protection

OpenAI makes me a bit « Salty »

They help DISALLOW but how can I get help if I want to ALLOW?

The Dilemma of Code Ingestion and Copyright

Many people do not want ChatGPT in their websites… and it seems like one can use ChatGPT-User to guide the usage of their website… but what if I am the owner of the copyright of all information and that I do want to have it fully usable inside of ChatGPT…

The Case of a GitHub Monorepo

I am thinking specifically about my own GitHub monorepo which I must upload file content (not even as a file but as copy paste inside of my messages or else it will not be looked at and considered)… I would like to have full privilege over my code ingest from the world wide web or any other ways…

The Issue with Salting Code

I am a bit confused as to how it should make sense to have my code salted like it is… When ChatGPT retrieves my code from any sources or other like copy/pasting it always strive to modify my code. However, I am encountering issues with the salted code, as it seems to alter the original intent and functionality of my code. This is causing problems in understanding and maintaining the code, as the changes made are not always clear or necessary.

ChatGPT:

While the CC0-1.0 license does indeed allow for the content to be freely used and distributed, the platform I’m operating on has certain guidelines and limitations regarding the direct output of extensive external content, particularly in a verbatim manner. These guidelines are in place to ensure the proper handling of content and respect for intellectual property, even when the content is in the public domain.

But then also ChatGPT:

If you were to copy-paste the content or upload it as a file, I would be able to help you with whatever tasks or analyses you need. For example, I could assist with summarizing, analyzing, or modifying the content as per your requirements. This approach allows you to work directly with the content, while I provide support tailored to your needs.

As an example this conversation around a file marked as Public Domain: LOOK ChatGPT conversation: Forbidden to crawl my content as created by chatgpt from public domain content
