Restore ChatGPT's Stop Button Without Errors

Very annoying. Previously when I wanted to add more context to my query i just stopped the reply and could continue with either editing the previous message, or simply typing new reply. Now it’s just erroring out and I MUST edit the reply, which usually doesn’t generate new reply from chatGPT but rather it all hangs and no reply is generated until i refresh the page

This bug has tanked the usability of the platform. Since I am paying for this… i have cancelled my subscription and moved everything over to Claude. This may seem like a trivial bug… but after a week of it not being fixed it’s simply unacceptable.

So not just me then …
The removal of the “Stop Generating” and prompt editing feature makes the user experience less flexible and more frustrating, especially when dealing with AI errors or misinterpretations like this one.

Why This Makes the Experience Worse:
:cross_mark: You’re forced to wait for an incorrect response before retrying.
:cross_mark: You can’t quickly tweak your prompt mid-way, which wastes time.
:cross_mark: AI sometimes misinterprets requests, and not being able to adjust quickly leads to a lot of repetitive trial and error.

What OpenAI Should Do Instead:
:white_check_mark: Bring back the “Stop Generating” button so users can instantly halt responses if they see an issue.
:white_check_mark: Allow mid-generation edits so we can fine-tune without having to regenerate from scratch.
:white_check_mark: Give users more control over AI interpretation, especially for visual tasks where precision is key.

I hope they reintroduce this feature soon because it would make a huge difference in efficiency and usability.

Not helpful at all! So many times it goes on a long long rant of irrelevant stuff, trying to give you a lecture when you have asked for something very simple. It wastes a lot of time that now you have to type again, or edit the previous prompt. It is most annoying when it keeps giving the “Why This Works”, “Conclusion”, “Summary”, “Let me explain to YOU why MY previous wrong response was wrong and how I will just talk about it rather than fix it”… there should be a way to stop the rant and correct its course.

Come on! When will you fix this??? :face_with_symbols_on_mouth::face_with_symbols_on_mouth::face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

This happens after pressing the Stop button, look:

Agreed, the functionality is broken, there are many times where allowing a full response would take 30 seconds or even minutes if you’re writing code, whatever the amount of time doesn’t matter… if you realize the response you’re getting is not the one you want and you want to submit a new prompt in the same context, you can no longer press the stop button to achieve that functionality. When I press stop, I also now get the “error generating response” text with the regenerate button when it used to just re-display the textbox input and you could keep going and submit a new prompt in seconds (rather than wait for the full response). now when i refresh the page, sometimes the full response is forced and you can’t submit a new prompt until that response if complete. I mean, can anybody at OpenAI run their web app code through ChatGPT and see what’s wrong with it maybe??

Makes the experience borderline unusable, if this isn’t fixed in a few days I’m canceling my Plus subscription.

Agree, this is a regression in the UI not a feature.

I too have starting using it less, using it in CoPilot or Gemini instead. Will be ending this subscription if this regression remains. I have resorted to down votes every time I need to adjust a prompt and this comes up.

UPDATE: Something for others to test.

In an attempt to shorten responses and avoid as much use of the broken button, I updated my profile to add even more refinement to my account and desired Chat profile responses.

When I did, the stop button started working again. Maybe this triggered some sort of account refresh and the bug was session/user based? Will track it, but it might help others.

I updated my profile hoping it’d trigger a change, but I’m still encountering this terrible new feature.

Please restore the button. Using ChatGPT has become unbearable.

This is STILL A BUG, and makes ChatGPT incredibly frustrating to use.

This has been working for at least the last week on my computer. I assumed they fixed it.

I have something I would like to add to this conversation because I found this conversation in my Google search while looking to see if there is another solution.

I also am having an issue with the stop button not working, and I can no longer send input to what I would consider the most important conversation I’ve had with Chatty in a while. This issue happened shortly after uploading a PDF file and asking ChatGPT to read it over. Its disappointing that I can’t send more messages. However, thats a lie, I can still send messages to the conversation with my phone. I discovered today that I can get around the disabled send button and continue the conversation with my phone. So I tried clearing cookies and browser cache to no avail, the stop button is still disabled. So what I’ve resorted to is having a second conversation in parallel, and then when I need to send anything to the more important conversation, I send the message to the second conversation on my computer, copy the entire message on my phone, and paste it back to the primary conversation so I can see the answer on my computer.

Its stupid work around, but it works for me.

I found another workaround for mobile device users who access chatgpt on google chrome/safari using their phones.

Simply request desktop mode on the webpage, enter your prompt, then when it’s done, switch it back to mobile mode and it goes back to normal.

In my device, requesting desktop mode is just a checkbox saying “desktop site”.
