Request to Allow Phone Number Replacement for ChatGPT Accounts

Dear OpenAI Team,

I would like to provide some feedback regarding phone numbers associated with ChatGPT accounts.

Currently, it appears that once a phone number has been linked to an account, there is no way to replace or update it. In my case, the phone number associated with my account is no longer in use, yet it still appears in my account settings. Seeing an outdated and incorrect phone number every time I access my account is frustrating, especially since there is no option to update it.

I completely understand that phone numbers may be used for security purposes and that unrestricted changes could introduce abuse risks. However, I hope you would consider adding a secure phone number replacement feature.

For example, you could:

  • Allow users to change their phone number only once every 30 days (or another reasonable period).

  • Require verification of both the account and the new phone number before the change is completed.

  • Introduce additional security checks if necessary.

Many users eventually change phone numbers because they switch carriers, move to another country, or simply stop using their old numbers. Providing a safe way to update the linked phone number would greatly improve the user experience while maintaining account security.

I hope you will consider implementing this feature in a future update.

I have attached a screenshot taken from the ChatGPT Android app. As you can see, the app still displays an outdated phone number that I no longer use.

Seeing this incorrect phone number every time I open my account is genuinely frustrating. It feels as though my account permanently contains incorrect personal information that I have no way to correct. More importantly, it gives me constant anxiety that I might run into account access or recovery issues in the future because the displayed phone number is no longer mine.

I sincerely hope OpenAI will provide users with a secure way to update or replace their linked phone numbers.

That's a thoughtful request. Unfortunately, it's not currently possible to change or switch the phone number associated with an OpenAI account.

This limitation exists to help protect the platform and prevent abuse. As part of that, each phone number can only be used to verify up to three unique OpenAI accounts.
