Questions about an unexpected Codex usage reset and new quota period

Hello,

I have a question regarding my Codex usage limits and quota cycle.

Yesterday (June 3, 2026), my Codex usage page showed approximately 70% of my quota remaining, and the reset date was June 7, 2026.

My understanding was that I could continue using the remaining quota during June 4–6, and then receive a fresh allocation when the quota reset on June 7.

However, today (June 4, 2026), I noticed that my usage has been reset to 100%, and the reset date has changed to June 11, 2026.

I would appreciate clarification on the following questions:

1. Why was my quota reset before the previously displayed reset date?

* What caused the reset to occur on June 4 instead of June 7?

* Is this expected behavior under the current Codex quota system?

2. What happened to my previously unused quota?

* Yesterday I still had approximately 70% remaining.

* Was that unused quota rolled into the new quota period?

* Or was a completely new quota period started from scratch?

3. If unused quota is rolled forward, how can I verify that?

* Is there any way to see the actual quota allocation behind the percentage shown in the UI?

* Does “100%” represent the same quota amount as before, or could it include unused quota from the previous period?

4. How are reset dates determined?

* Are reset dates fixed?

* Are they based on a rolling window?

* Can they change automatically during a billing cycle?

5. As a ChatGPT Pro subscriber ($100/month plan), is there any documentation that explains how Codex quota resets and rollover behavior work?

I am mainly trying to understand how the quota system works so I can plan my usage more effectively.

Thank you for any clarification.

Hi @jiaobinshi
The Codex team reset it all for everyone on a paid subscription due to having noticed issues over the past 24 hours. Codex being the epic team that they are do resets like this to show the users appreciation during times when things may be a bit wonky with the tool. Sort of a “sorry this happened, but we care so want to reset limits for you all as a thanks for understanding”. This was one of those cases. If you follow Tibo on X you see when he does the resets. https://x.com/thsottiaux/status/2062329981548802523?s=20

That should answer all the questions you had tbh. But if not, I will try to help you out here in the order you listed:

  1. See X post I linked. Again, this happens every so often by the Codex team so its great to follow them on X.
  2. they are gone. you get to start fresh.
  3. they dont roll forward. you start fresh
  4. They are determined by the Codex team when they feel a reset is warranted. Again, follow them on X and you can see when they do or get a sense of when they might. They are very open about this.
  5. I dont think there are docs about that for anyone as again, this type of reset was team Codex controlled. not your standard weekly reset.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. (This reset may feel like a benefit for heavy users before the reset date, but not for those of us who were planning our usage around the remaining quota.)

Thanks for the detailed questions @jiaobinshi, and thanks @Hey_Stu for providing the context and source.

@Hey_Stu is correct here. The Codex team performed a manual reset for paid subscribers following recent service issues, which explains why your usage returned to 100% before the previously displayed reset date and why the reset date changed.

So what you saw was not a normal scheduled quota renewal. Users were given a fresh allocation, replacing the previous quota period and any remaining balance associated with it.
