Purchased 1000 credits, gone in under an hour

Hey everyone. I just purchased 1000 credits within hours of receiving another usage limit exceeded message and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this today?

The flow I had was:

Got usage exceeded wait until x day or buy more credits / upload to pro

Then went ahead and purchased credits. Saw that it hit my bank.

Went back to vscode and it was all working fine.

Then 1/2 hours later Got the usage exceeded again.

Went to the codex usage page and saw it said 0 credits left. Can’t see my usage. It stops as of April 7th. Not sure what’s going on. But I know there’s no way I’ve used 1000 credits in like an hour of coding

OpenAI changed the pricing and usage in ChatGPT for Codex credits - still with an unclear and unpublished amount that you get included with a subscription. It is now a direct consumption from your balance based on token usage, at the same pricing you’d get if using the API.

With: the disadvantage that you are forced to buy large increments, only useful in ChatGPT for Codex, virtually ensuring breakage (purchased but unused credits kept by OpenAI). The mapping of “credits” to the value of them is also highly-obfuscated.

Codex usage is priced based on API token usage, calculated as credits per million input tokens, cached input tokens and output tokens. Learn more about tokens here.

This format replaces average per-message estimates with a direct mapping between token usage and credits. It is most useful when you want a clearer view of how input, cached input, and output affect credit consumption.

Under this model, actual credit usage depends on the mix of input, cached input, and output tokens in each task. The table below displays credits per 1M tokens for each token type.

Model Input Tokens Cached input tokens Output Tokens
GPT-5.4 62.50 credits 6.250 credits 375 credits
GPT-5.4-Mini 18.75 credits 1.875 credits 113 credits
GPT-5.3-Codex 43.75 credits 4.375 credits 350 credits
GPT-5.2-Codex 43.75 credits 4.375 credits 350 credits
GPT-5.2 43.75 credits 4.375 credits 350 credits
GPT-5.1-Codex-Max 31.25 credits 3.125 credits 250 credits
GPT-5.1-Codex-mini 6.25 credits 0.625 credits 50 credits

Hi @Vegals

That doesn’t line up with normal usage, especially with the usage page not updating and dropping to 0 right after purchase.

I’d first double-check that your VS Code setup is pointing to the same project/API key where you added the credits, and that the credits weren’t added to a different workspace.

If that all looks right, this starts to look more like a billing or dashboard sync issue than actual usage.

If you can, share the purchase timestamp, what model you were using, and whether it still shows 0 credits now. That’ll help narrow it down.

For anything account-specific, it’s also worth reaching out to support@openai.com with your receipt and a screenshot of the usage page.

Hello @OpenAI_Support
I just experienced the same thing. Loaded it up with $40 for a thousand tokens, and in less than an hour it was all gone. The dashboard doesn’t update usage as fast as it should, so I can’t figure out how Codex consumed that amount in that span of time.

Yes, it’s starting to looks like a billing issue more than anything.

Codex is basically unusable now. used my week’s worth of credits in less than 5 hours. if it doesn’t get more reasonable, I will for sure just go to Claude like everyone else

Woah codex rate limits have either been wildly nerfed or credits usage have gone through the roof! Were my credits promised to openAI’s bosspeople 3000 years ago too?
That Claude guy is starting to sound pretty nice…

Same here!
Purchased 1000 credits yesterday and saw that I still have about 914 more credits left before I turn off my PC and went to sleep.
Got up in the morning and saw it turn to 0 credit. How to get my credits back??
