Codex - Usage after the limit reset update, single prompt eats 7% of weekly limits - Plus tier

I wanted to share some details on how the token system works now on Plus tier.

The Codex token limits were finally reset and I was credited 4992 credits for an earlier 40 USD credit purchase.

Here’s my balance before running Codex.

Here are the limits after running a single 1x prompt, which generated practically a single line of code change.

Here are the findings:

  • This prompt ate 7% of the weekly usage limit
  • It consumed 25% of the 5 hour usage limit
  • Since I can’t observe how many tokens each prompt uses the system is still highly unpredictable

If we extrapolate from this, it is still unsustainable to use for real development tasks. The limits are confusing and cost is highly unpredictable, at least the Plus tier is no longer a viable option for developers IF these limits stay.

A single line code changes in general shouldn’t consume significant resources, I do understand it’s not how the tokens are calculated and there are many moving parts, but as a developer it’s difficult to quantify the value without also referencing the generated output.

I tried another 1x task, which was running for 40 minutes until it finally failed, that one luckily didn’t appear to cost me anything so at least that’s working now, but Codex does appear to be less stable now than what it was prior to the update.

I’ll continue investigating, please share your experiences as well!

Update:

I added one heavier task at 1x, and the weekly allocation dropped by 20%. Plus tier will give you 5 good prompts in a week with Codex Cloud at this rate.

It still seems to be ‘‘ bugged ‘‘ a few prompts and you are through your weekly usage.

I’m happy that we have been credited these credits but @OpenAI_Support told us here on these forums that it was a bug with the usage, it seems that this bug still hasn’t been fixed and is still eating up everyone’s weekly/daily usage.

When we see Codex’s performance, especially for investigation—meaning autonomous research through the identification of relevant contexts—we can understand why the allowed token limit has changed.

Indeed, it would be preferable to obtain transparency from OpenAI regarding the actual value of tokens per day/week.

At the very least, a representation of the credits. The offer is $40 for 1,000 credits, but indeed, if we do not have control over the actual consumption of credits, it is not relevant.

Well I’ve had mine use 97% of my weekly allowance from three prompts but ONLY 91% of the 5 hour allowance, how is that possible. And you can see that this timeframe reset only 20 minutes ago. All it’s done is update the CSS on three pages to match an existing page.

Now it’s going backwards :):):):)

I currently have two Plus accounts, one personal, one for work stuff. It happened to me that one single prompt ate all of my 5h limit and didn’t even finish. This makes codex unusable for me. Happened twice.

Today something similar happens. Two tasks, 40 % of 5 hour limit gone. Codex did not behave like this for me like 2 weeks ago.

EDIT: Now it seems the issue has been resolved. I don’t reach my 5h limit that fast anymore

Cloud & browser based Codex eats usage limits, you can get a little bit more mileage by switching to IDE & local.

I have also hit my Weekly limit very easily and an on the Pro plan.. seems to be bugged.. any response from @OpenAI_Support ?

Same thing happening to me, my 5h = 86% and weekly =86%, I have just started using codex within the last 3 hours? I guess weekely is not equal to 5h, right? what happened?

here is the answer to this and the other hundreds of issues in this community. Ditch ClosedAI and go to Anthropic/Claude Code/SDK.
