Please restore the project home page for managing chats and source files

Hi OpenAI team and community,

I would like to request the return of a clearly accessible home page for each ChatGPT Project.

Previously, clicking a project I had created would open a dedicated project overview page where I could see my previous conversations and the source files uploaded to that project. Having everything in one place made it easy to review the project’s context and manage its materials.

Recently, I have been unable to find that project home page. The only place I can currently find to add source files is within Project Settings, rather than in a dedicated project workspace.

This has significantly disrupted my software development workflow. I use Projects for ongoing work, where past conversations and uploaded reference files need to remain easy to find and manage. A settings menu does not provide the same visibility or convenience as a dedicated project overview page.

I have also encountered file-upload failures when adding larger files through Project Settings. For example, an approximately 46 MB ZIP archive fails to upload, while much smaller files upload successfully. I do not know whether this is related to the missing project page or is a separate issue, but it makes the current workflow even more difficult.

My main request here is to restore, or provide an equally accessible replacement for, the previous project home page. Ideally, it should let users view their project conversations, see all attached source files, and add or manage those files directly from one central page.

I am not sure whether the page has been intentionally changed, moved elsewhere, or become inaccessible because of a bug affecting my account. If it has moved, please clarify how users can access the equivalent view. Otherwise, please consider restoring the previous experience.

ChatGPT Projects are an important part of my development work, and bringing back this centralized view would make a meaningful difference.

I totally agree.
And I would go one step further, please stop randomly breaking UI and features.
And POLL your userbase via the UI to see if they want or like these updates.

I rely heavily on ChatGPT Projects for long-running work, often with many projects and many chats inside each project. The recent Projects navigation changes have removed several genuinely useful workflows and made project management substantially less efficient.

This is not primarily a cosmetic preference. It is a navigation and information-architecture regression.

Previously, Projects behaved like real destinations:

  1. There was a full-page Projects view.
    I could see my projects in a proper workspace rather than only in the narrow sidebar. This made it much easier to scan a larger number of projects and understand their activity.

  2. Opening a project took me to a dedicated Project page.
    That page gives a much better overview of the chats inside the project, including useful information such as how old individual conversations are and when they were last active.

  3. The project name/breadcrumb at the top of a chat behaved like a normal link.
    I could right-click it and open the Project page in another browser tab. This was extremely useful when working across several conversations while keeping the overall project visible.

The new design has weakened or removed all three navigation paths.

The sidebar is useful as a compact shortcut, but it is not an adequate replacement for a full Project workspace. Search can still surface a Project page, but having to search for something I am already inside simply to reach its parent Project is backwards navigation.

A good solution would not require undoing the new sidebar design. Please keep the sidebar, but restore the missing hierarchy alongside it:

Projects → full-page Project Hub → individual Project Home → chats

Specifically, I would ask OpenAI to restore:

  • A “View all Projects” / “Project Hub” page showing every project, ideally sortable by last activity, creation date, and name.

  • A straightforward way to open an individual Project Home from the sidebar.

  • A clickable project name/breadcrumb at the top of every project chat that links back to Project Home.

  • Normal browser-link behavior for these links, including right-click → Open in new tab, middle-click, Copy link, etc.

  • The existing Project Home view showing chats with their relative dates / recent activity.

Projects are meant for persistent, multi-threaded work. As users accumulate more projects and more conversations, navigation needs to become richer, not more compressed.

Please treat the sidebar as one navigation surface, not as a replacement for the full Project information architecture.

I would strongly encourage the product/UI team to restore these capabilities, or at minimum provide an optional “Project Hub” view for users who manage substantial amounts of work in Projects.

I completely agree with this request. The recent change has made Projects significantly harder to use.

In my case, I have projects containing many chats. Previously, accessing and navigating those conversations was straightforward. Now the project chats are pushed down in the sidebar, and I repeatedly have to click “Show more” just to access them.

This adds unnecessary friction to something I use constantly. Search, pinning chats, or the sidebar are not good replacements for a proper Project Home.

Please restore the previous Project navigation, or at least provide an option to use the previous layout.

The churn in the webui is annoying. Not being able to click on a project to open it or open it in a new tab, the 3 dot menu no longer providing a link to the project home. These aren’t QoL improvements so much as regressions. Today marks the 3rd such round of changes I’ve noted in the last week. It’s not helpful at all.

I agree. The new UI is so bad and disrupting. The product team needs to really actually use these products to see how frustrating they are.

+1. This is exactly what has happened to me too.

The old Projects overview was one of the most useful parts of ChatGPT for me. I could browse through my Projects and find what I needed without already knowing exactly what to search for.

Now everything is pushed into the sidebar and it is much harder to manage. Search is not the same thing as being able to browse all Projects properly.

I really hope the old Projects overview comes back. I have built a large part of my workflow around Projects, so this change is genuinely frustrating. If this is the permanent design, I may have to start looking at Claude or another service.

I strongly agree with the criticism of the recent changes to the Projects navigation.

As a web and graphic designer, I find this UI decision particularly frustrating and difficult to understand.

Why has the dedicated “Projects” navigation item been removed from the main sidebar?

Projects are a core feature for users working on complex, long-term tasks. We need a clear, intuitive way to access an overview of all our projects and manage their chats, source files, and instructions.

Instead, clicking a project name now simply expands its conversations. Accessing the actual project home page requires discovering a tiny pencil icon that gives no clear indication of its purpose.

This is poor UX. Basic principles such as discoverability, intuitive navigation, and consistency have been sacrificed for no obvious benefit.

I spent a considerable amount of time trying to find my project overview because I needed to upload a Word document as a project source — not as an attachment to an individual chat.

Interestingly, the mobile app still provides direct access to Projects. Why remove this functionality from the web interface?

My request is simple: Please restore “Projects” as a clearly visible, dedicated navigation item in the main sidebar, leading directly to an overview of all projects. Clicking an individual project should open its project home page.

At the very least, give users the option to choose between the old and new navigation.

Please don’t make essential functionality harder to find in the name of redesign. A good interface should make our work easier, not force us to search for features that were previously accessible with a single click.

I genuinely hope the UX team will reconsider this decision.
