Removal of 'Projects' Feature Has Severely Disrupted Workflow – Request for Restoration

I am reaching out to express my deep frustration regarding the removal of the “Projects” feature in ChatGPT. This feature was an essential part of my workflow, allowing me to:

Group related conversations under specific projects.
Keep track of project-based discussions and decisions without manually searching through past chats.
Store and manage uploaded documents in a structured, easily retrievable way.

Since its removal, I have faced major setbacks, including:

Lost organization – Conversations that were previously neatly grouped are now scattered and difficult to track.
Reduced efficiency – Instead of accessing project discussions in one place, I must manually sift through unrelated chats.
Increased workload – What was once seamless is now time-consuming, forcing me to recreate structures manually.

Request for Action:

I strongly urge OpenAI to:

  1. Clarify why this feature was removed and whether a replacement is planned.
  2. Reinstate the “Projects” feature or provide an equivalent solution that enables users to group and retrieve past project-related discussions and files efficiently.
  3. Engage with affected users to understand the impact and explore solutions that maintain structured workflows.

This removal has negatively affected business users, project managers, and anyone relying on ChatGPT for structured work management. If OpenAI does not intend to restore this functionality, I would appreciate transparency on that decision so I can evaluate alternative AI solutions that better support my needs.

I look forward to OpenAI’s response and any updates on this matter.

If you also relied on “Projects,” please comment and support this post so OpenAI understands the urgency.

Je viens de perdre 6 mois de boulot après la disparition de tous mes projets constatée aujourd’hui. Impossible de récupérer les conversations qui n’apparaissent pas dans l’historique. Je suis dégoutée

I had this same issue happen to me last night. I was also initially really upset for the reasons you mentioned.

Through some digging, and some trial and error, I found a workaround that has been working for me.

  1. Start the mobile version of chatGPT, and you should see your project folder still in your account (this was true for me).
  2. Load a project folder by clicking on it and opening it.
  3. Refresh the desktop version of chatGPT, and you should see the project folders restored.

No idea what is causing this, but this workaround has worked for me every time I have loaded the desktop version and found that the project folders are missing. Hope this helps.

Please check if your Privacy Badger (or a similar browser extension) is active. In my case, PB was disabled for a while due to compatibility issues, but yesterday, an updated version was installed automatically and reactivated. After disabling it for the ChatGPT webpage, the Projects section became visible again.
