Works on Firefox but not on Edge, Chrome, Safari… thats a bummer

Today, I’ve had this problem all day on Windows 7 Chrome. I opened Chat in Firefox and asked, ‘Why do I have an error message on Windows 7 Chrome saying “Oops, an error occurred!” today?’ Here is his answer:

It sounds like you are experiencing an error specific to the ChatGPT_com webpage on your Windows 7 Chrome browser. This type of issue can occur due to several reasons. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Clear Browser Cache and Cookies:
    Open Chrome.
    Click on the three dots (menu) in the upper right corner.
    Go to More tools > Clear browsing data.
    Select All time for the time range.
    Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
    Click Clear data.

Update Chrome:
    Make sure your Chrome browser is up to date as newer versions may contain fixes for issues you are experiencing.
    Click on the three dots (menu) in the upper right corner.
    Go to Help > About Google Chrome.
    Chrome will check for updates and install them if available.
    Restart Chrome.

Disable Extensions:
    Sometimes extensions can interfere with webpage functionality.
    Open Chrome and click on the three dots (menu).
    Go to More tools > Extensions.
    Disable all extensions by toggling them off.
    Try accessing the ChatGPT_com webpage again.

Try Incognito Mode:
    Open Chrome.
    Click on the three dots (menu) in the upper right corner.
    Select New incognito window.
    Try accessing the ChatGPT_com webpage in incognito mode.

Check for Windows Updates:
    Ensure that your Windows 7 system is up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft.
    Go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update.

Try a Different Browser:
    If the issue persists, try accessing the ChatGPT_com webpage using a different browser like Firefox, Edge, or another one.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, there might be a problem with the ChatGPT_com server or an issue specific to your network or system configuration. In such a case, you may want to reach out to ChatGPT_com support for further assistance.

And as you might guess, using Firefox helped me.

Same problem, I get it on my iPhone, have tried multiple ways but still “Oops, an error occurred! “ after writing a message to chatGPT

I had the same error with Chrome & Opera then downloaded the Firefox and it’s working pretty fine now. Using Firefox may fix your problem too.

ChatGPT only works on Firefox, seems that I’m not the only one running Windows 7 in 2024.

TESTS :test_tube:
[Windows 7]:

  1. In Google Chrome version: “109.0.5414.120” does not work :no_entry_sign:
  2. In Mozilla Firefox version: “115.14.0esr” works :white_check_mark:

[Windows 11]:

  1. In Google Chrome version: “128.0.6613.7” works :white_check_mark:

[Android 10]:

  1. In Google Chrome version: “126.0.6478.122” works :white_check_mark:

PROBLEMS :supervillain:
Apparently the browser version requirements have increased. In Windows 7, Google Chrome no longer allows you to update beyond version: “109.0.5414.120”. Currently parts of the chatGPT javascript code are trying to use functionality that does not exist in older versions of browsers.

SOLUTIONS :monkey_face: ( “Javascript code answered by chatGPT” )
Only the following options remain:

  • #1 :sunglasses: . install another browser. For example Mozilla Firefox.
  • #2 :nerd_face: . (automatically inject method: “toSorted” to array prototype if not present) :
-- In Google Chrome install the extension: " https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/resource-override/pkoacgokdfckfpndoffpifphamojphii " (Resource Override) and configure the following -- :

1 - [Open: Resource Override] :

2 - [Press Button: Add Tab Group] :
Tab URL: " *chatgpt.com/* "

3 - [Press Button: Add Rule > Press Button: Inject File] :
Name: " ArrayPrototypeToSorted.js "
File Type: " JS "
Inject into: " Head "

4 - [Press Button: Edit File] :
//copy this (ArrayPrototypeToSorted.js) . ini
if (!Array.prototype.toSorted) {
    Array.prototype.toSorted = function(compareFn) {
        compareFn = compareFn || ((a, b) => String(a).localeCompare(b));
        const arrayCopy = [...this];
        return arrayCopy.sort(compareFn);
    };
}
//copy this (ArrayPrototypeToSorted.js) . end
[Press Button: Save & Close] .

-- On page load: "*chatgpt.com/*" ; This will add the missing functionality. --

Resource Override Configuration . Capture:

  • #3 :cold_face: . Let’s let our beloved Windows 7 go once and for all so we can update Google Chrome

Confirming that Firefox Version 115 will both

1) work with Windows 7; and
2) work with CHATGPT

Yes, the error is only when using chatgpt on Win 7. It is working fine on Windows 11

same :frowning: please do something OpenAI

Windows 8.1
-Firefox :ok_hand:
-Chrome :-1:

I’ll be honest, it’s been kind of validating to see there are so many of us still attached to Windows 7 :laughing:

This is not Windows 7 related. I am using Windows 7 and get this error on Chrome, but not on Firefox.

Chrome, Brave, and Opera are all Chromium browsers. Perhaps it is related to that.

Yes this could be related to the version of Chrome being used on Windows 7, but it was working fine up until yesterday, so if so, something in Open AI was changed to not allow older versions recently.

I am having this issue on Windows 10 and Chrome 106. I suspect it is a problem with older browsers.

I’ve come to the same conclusion. It’s a browser issue. You now need the latest Chrome / Chromium or Firefox browser.

On Windows 7 Chome is not updated anymore, so Chrome and Chromium browsers like Edge won’t work on Windows 7 anymore. The only solution there is apparently Firefox which still supports Windows 7 in its newer versions.

On Windows 10 and 11 you can just update Chrome or Edge or Firefox to the newest version and then it should work in any of them.

This might be a final thing or OpenAI might still fix it to allow older browser versions to use ChatGPT. We’ll see. But for now, only newest browsers are working.
