ChatGPT can now reference all past conversations – April 10, 2025

This tweet from Sam Altman is literally blowing up on Twitter/X right now:

I couldn’t find any other official links or YouTube links, so all we have to do is speculate on what it will be.

And this is the reveal:

ChatGPT is now able to remember details across all conversations, making it a full-blown personal assistant and AI buddy.

Keep us posted if you like it and how you plan to use it.

Could it have something to do with the posts from April 4th?

I would have expected o3 or the open source model but would that be a feature?

Now that the Assistants have been relaunched as agents maybe it’s an upgrade to the GPT Store?

It’s ten days too late to float an announcement that everyone’s getting a year’s back-pay with the full roll-out of the GPT revenue-sharing plan…

I hope this is not the feature:

This extended memory feature has been around for some time now, AFAIK.

What’s the update exactly?

Not only saved memory, but all previous chats:

I am hoping not. I am not being one of these people thinking of ChatGPT as a friend, conversing with it about what are being my hopes and dreams, I am using ChatGPT to help me solving problems.

Often I am needing to start new chats because once ChatGPT goes down wrong path too far it cannot finding its way back.

I am with memory off already so this not affecting me, but this is seeming like a very minor “feature” and one which I am believing was already announced long time ago. Is it not just embedding old chats and doing RAG on them?

Seems that now you can allow it to use your chat history to improve the answers.

Particularly I’m not sure I want that, so I’ll pass it for now.

Maybe this is finally the “replacement” model for 4o? Aka ChatGPT 5o or 5.0 or whatever they’re gonna call it?

So, if we ask “Create an image you know about me”, what happens?

Yes, I understand what the feature is, but the page was first published several weeks ago. It was unlisted, and I am wondering if there are any changes from the initial version to today’s update.

Thinking a little further, this could be really interesting if that could be enabled individually for selected projects instead of the chat history (chaos), as it would be more like real RAGs with defined purposes.

Of course not mixing all selected projects, more like a RAG for each project.

upper-right: you can now directly delete the chat with a blind kebab menu instead of fidgeting with flaky chat sidebar event javascript that tries to update the DOM on hover events to get to a button:

Big news! Chat action right next to global action!

Also, magically changing purpose: somewhere else, you get “rename project”..

Ok, so here is the reveal tweet

From the initial reactions it looks like there were quite a few people who were looking to make ChatGPT their personal assistant and buddy. Yeah, great news!

I deleted all my chats yesterday…

I will now consider carefully what I share…

Wow I wonder how many ChatGPT users will get this notification…

I wonder what this means for ‘memories’

Your chats were always “there”. You already pressed “enter” on the input you previously provided.

There’s no “training on your data” when an embeddings database is used on your past chat turns, as the tech can’t work that way and doesn’t “generate”.

There is only: search results filling the AI context with distraction unrelated to your task every turn. “I’d prefer that with a watercolor style” of another job to confuse your session with global memory enabled.

Most of thoughts are on this public forum… Now I get to think about personalisation…

Without knowing the algorithms concerned I am happy to make this distinction

I guess others would be between work and home life

It’s going to suck for those who are mainly AI generated in the first place I guess?
