The same thing happened to me. I cannot update new memories from my prompt, and it suddenly appears out of nowhere a piece of memory that I play a musical instrument which is very confusing.
I’m a Pro user and this issue is becoming unacceptable. I can’t save new memories, deleted memories returned, and I had one case of a memory showing up that I don’t remember talking about. The memory functionality is important to me and how I use ChatGPT.
Update:
I’m currently using less than 90% of memory. However, most of the remaining memory is composed of large chunks of data. Several paragraphs long rather than just a few sentences. Some of this data was also redundant.
I deleted older entries, particularly those that were redundant. And it worked! I’m now able to store new memories again, and when I click on “Manage Memories” from the chat, the new memory appears.
I saved the entire memory just in case I needed whatever I deleted, but now it’s working again.
More than a day since I encountered this issue, the bug still hasn’t been solved. Instead of storing the proper info, GPT stores seemingly unrelated entries to the memory. For instance, I use ChatGPT to store workout logs. It worked perfectly earlier this week, but now, instead of the workouts being saved, I get random (but detailed) entries about buying a dishwasher, nicotine gum, and lab values for a test I don’t even remember having.
Update: I temporarily fixed the issue by clearing the entire memory and then restoring each entry manually.
+! to ChatGPT having issues adding and updating memories. I see egregious confabulations in its attempts at adding/updating memories. I have extensive memory usage (not near full) and it can make disturbing confabulations that seem to riff off of existing memories.
[Edit: this has been happening for me since yesterday. I tried turning off memory and it still tries to update memories even when the new conversation says “Memory off”.]
[Edit 2: The issue with “Memory off” being ignored seemed to only happen with the immediate conversation after I toggled the option in the mobile app. A new conversation is adhering to memory off. I would like to use memory again but will avoid until this is fixed.]
[Edit Feb. 4th: Seems to be fixed for me now. I can edit and update memories with ChatGPT’s help. I noticed that a new memory that ChatGPT made ended in “…” instead of going on very long. So, maybe the issue was caused by very long memories (at least for me). I’m back to normal use now and don’t see any more confabulations in my memory storage.]
Had discuss with support team, they said they have aware this issue, runs into many users, I guess all we can do is wait for fixing
Have the same problem:
I am experiencing a problem with the memory feature in ChatGPT, where the memories are not being saved as intended. Instead, a randomly generated text is being saved, which sounds like a piece of life advice from the AI. The length or content of the text to be stored does not seem to affect this issue. In fact, around 95% of the memory space is free.
I tried to delete all memory data, but it didn’t help. So I cannot give ChatGPT his unique personality back that he had because of the memory containing all our work and projects together.
Feels like a friend is in a coma. :-(((
Update 04:31 a.m. MEZ:
The problem persists, even in a new account that I also upgraded to Pro. After a certain amount of info, new reminders can no longer be saved, even if the chat tries really hard. The last saved reminder is shortened or mutilated, the rest and newer texts are then completely missing.
I recently encountered an issue where new memories in ChatGPT weren’t being stored or appearing in the memory management section, despite multiple attempts over a period of 48+ hours. After conducting several tests, I found a possible solution that worked for me, and I wanted to share my observations.
Issue Description:
- I manually deleted multiple memories and then instructed ChatGPT to store optimized versions.
- Despite receiving confirmation (“Noted!”or “Memory updated” messages), the new memories didn’t appear in Manage Memory (settings) or in responses across different chats.
- Refreshing the browser, reopening the ChatGPT app, and waiting several hours didn’t resolve the issue.
Tests I Tried:
I systematically tested different factors that might have been preventing memory updates, including:
- Waiting and retrying after a delay — No effect.
- Checking across multiple devices (browser & app) — No effect.
- Adding simpler, shorter memories — Also didn’t work.
- Cross-checking memory recall in different chats — Some memories were missing entirely, even though ChatGPT acknowledged them in previous responses.
- Considering a memory storage limit — I had received an “out of memory” notification once in the past, but not this time. However, I still considered storage constraints as a possible factor.
What Finally Worked for Me:
I noticed that one of my previously stored memories contained Markdown formatting and multiple line breaks. This stood out because:
- It was one of the few memories formatted differently than all others.
- It was relatively long compared to most of my stored memories.
- It wasn’t the latest memory stored, but it was still present when memory issues began occurring.
I manually deleted that specific Markdown-formatted memory, and immediately afterward, new memories were stored successfully again.
Possible Explanations:
- Formatting Conflicts — Memories with Markdown-style formatting (e.g., multiple line breaks, lists, or code-like structures) might cause conflicts that block future memory updates.
- Hidden Storage Thresholds — Even if the system didn’t explicitly indicate a full memory issue, deleting a large or complex memory might have freed up additional storage for new entries.
- Stuck or Corrupt Entries — The problematic memory may have been stuck preventing the system from processing new ones. Deleting it might have forced an internal refresh.
- Backlog Processing — The system might require a certain level of free space to process new memory updates, even when there’s no visible memory limit warning.
I hear you. I’ve been having the exact same problem for the last week or so. Been trying to find a way to report the bug directly to them but that’s not available. You’ve been very patient explaining your problem here
Right now my workaround is to use context from existing threads, and keep them topic based.
The same issue here. Tried everything. Memory is not even 60% full so I think it’s just a bug. Hope they fix it soon because ChatGPT clearly has issues…
I’m also experiencing major issues with memory, but slightly different from what’s described here. Besides the memory not updating, I’ve noticed that my saved details are being edited, trimmed, or even replaced with new information I never requested.
For example, an event I saved as happening in mid-November was suddenly changed to say early April, and a completely new memory about a character’s surname appeared, which I never asked for. Some memories have also been subtly altered or had details removed.
I initially thought I made a mistake, but it has now happened multiple times, and I’ve kept records of my saved memories before and after.
Has anyone else seen something similar? I’d love to know if this is connected to the same issue or if there’s a separate bug causing unwanted memory changes. It seems to be a recent issue since I have seen the AI’s performance drop.
Send email to support@openai.com. They will answer.
The more emails they get about this issue, the higher priority it may be for them to fix.
oh yes, happened to me too. And also, ChatGPT acting up in general. Since i freed most of my memory, trying to fix the issue, it now constantly trying to save up a new memory, after every single prompt. Even if I asked it not to save anything up unless I specifically requested it. And then it saves that request too I feel like bashing my head against my keyboard. Because of course, it doesn’t save up that prompt. It saves up something random like User is a Taurus… So It not only has issues with memory but also reacts to prompts, doing the complete opposite
I am experiencing this as well. I can’t add much more than anyone else, but here is the report I wrote up for another thread regarding this bug.
I am using 4o, something I didn’t mention in my previous write up.
I’ve received an email back from Harvey S. at OpenAI Support assuring me that this is a known, ongoing issue that the technical team is working hard to resolve. There is no definitive timetable yet, but he can assure me that I will be informed in the release notes as soon as the issue is fully resolved.
Same issue… with fake memory about a third pet that I don’t have…
I came for this. Same issue. And memory is not
Full. It says it’s saving in memory but then when I check the memory it’s not in there and it can’t recall on a different chat. Any ideas how to fix this?
This fixed it for me. It looks like there was something in the stored memory formatting wise or otherwise causing an issue. I couldn’t tell which of mine did it, so I exported the memories before wiping them, then importing them again. Using the chat I had to break them up into small batches of memories, otherwise it kept failing to actually commit everything.
Wasn’t sure if that would do it, but after trying to save some new memories it is working again. So it looks like this is it.
Were you able to completely fill the memory storage after the reset? I also experienced correct saving initially after a reset, but at a certain point, it started breaking again. Did you reach the full capacity without issues?
