OpenAI previously removed the five-hour limit, then restored it after some users became confused by long-running tasks.
That makes sense as a safe default, but advanced users should be able to opt out intentionally.
Please keep the five-hour limit enabled by default and add an advanced toggle such as “Allow runs longer than 5 hours” or “Disable automatic five-hour stop.”
Users who do not need extended runs can leave the default unchanged. Users running long research, coding, testing, monitoring, automation, or agentic workflows can explicitly authorize a longer run.
A confirmation could say:
This may allow tasks to continue for an extended period. You are responsible for monitoring usage and stopping tasks you no longer need.
Confusion is a reason for a safe default, not a reason to remove the control from everyone. Please make the guardrail default-on but user-disableable.
