Feature Request: Make Projects and Custom GPTs Work Together
First, I want to say how much I appreciate both Projects and Custom GPTs. They have fundamentally changed how I work and have become an important part of my professional workflow.
However, after building and using multiple Custom GPTs, I’ve encountered what I believe is a significant limitation.
I develop and maintain several Custom GPTs for education, including Assess4Us (assessment support) and CLIL4Us (lesson planning and CLIL support). These are not casual experiments—they are long-term professional projects that I continuously improve, test, and refine.
Naturally, I also want to organize everything related to each project in a Project:
- research papers
- PDFs
- Word documents
- planning notes
- development discussions
- meeting notes
- ideas for future improvements
Unfortunately, this is where the workflow breaks down. If I start a conversation with one of my Custom GPTs, that conversation becomes a Custom GPT conversation and cannot be moved into a Project.
This means I have to split my work between two separate environments:
Project
- Files
- Documentation
- Research
- Planning
- Standard ChatGPT conversations
Custom GPT
- Development discussions
- Testing
- Prompt improvements
- Design decisions
Ironically, the most valuable conversations—the ones where I develop my own GPT—are the only ones that cannot be organized together with the rest of the project.
My suggestion
Instead of treating Projects and Custom GPTs as separate systems, let them work together.
For example:
- Allow a Project to have a default Custom GPT.
- Allow existing Custom GPT conversations to be moved into a Project.
- Let Project files, Project instructions, and Custom GPT capabilities work together in one unified workspace.
That would create a much more powerful environment for educators, researchers, developers, consultants, and organizations building long-term AI workflows.
At the moment, professional users are forced to choose between:
- Projects for organization
- Custom GPTs for specialization
Ideally, we shouldn’t have to choose.
Projects should organize our work.
Custom GPTs should power our work.
Together, they would create an outstanding professional workspace.
