I’m experiencing an issue with uploading files in ChatGPT. I receive the message: (“Cannot upload file”), and after that, the system prevents me from adding any more files or images, even though I haven’t successfully uploaded any today.
I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps:
Refreshing the page,
Logging out and back in,
Using a different browser,
Clearing cache and cookies,
Trying on a different device.
Unfortunately, the issue persists. Could you please assist me in resolving this?
I am having a similar issue. Tried to upload several PDF files, ranging from 1 MB to 5 MB. Getting “Unknown Error Occurred” message each time. I asked GPT if they are experiencing broad issues with uploads. It said no.
I’ve been having issues with this as well, I know its session based because new chats always take the upload fine but if you continually upload in the same chat, it just says it can’t access it.
There were some Google hits on this issue happening for a bit back in May 2024. I am glad that i found the community forum with other people experiencing this issue now.
I was getting frustrating as i was using it for work to experiment with tokenizing some of our quality program. I thought i had hit a data limit or something because of the size of the documents.
Im just happy to discover its not something unknown on my end causing the issue.
I signed up for ChatGPT Pro and using verion 40. I am supposed to have the fully funtional version of ChatGPT, as I paid for, but I clearly do not. There are not paperclip icon or upload button to submit files in the chat interchange. I tried trouble shooting via the Chatgpt but with no success. I went to Open AI site and submitted a service ticket. I was offered a refund as I have exahaused all of my otions to fix this issue. I was told it is a “Back End” issue with ChatGPT. Too bad as I was really looking forward to using the app.
I completely agree. We’ve even tried workarounds like converting files into Python strings and chunking them below 9,500 tokens to stay within GPT-4’s limits—but without file upload functionality, it’s a frustrating and inefficient experience. For a Pro-tier service, this feels like a partial product. At minimum, there should be either a timely fix or a discount until full functionality is restored. Hoping OpenAI resolves the backend issue soon—it’s a powerful tool when it’s actually working as advertised.
Project file uploads are no longer working as of today. The only solution is to upload files into chat messages. This was intermittent problem with workarounds before today, but project files are no longer working at all.
So infuriating to be paying for a service that has these sorts of issues and is supposed to be the cutting edge, but they can’t bother to respond with an update? I won’t be a member long if this keeps up.
Thanks to everyone confirming the issue—clearly not an isolated case.
What’s disappointing is the complete silence from OpenAI. We’re paying for GPT-4o under the assumption it includes all functionality, including file upload. Right now, that’s not true.
We’ve ruled out user error:
Different browsers
Clean environments
Token-splitting workarounds (which break formatting and context flow)
This is a feature regression. It’s likely a UI toggle or backend permission sync failure. And if that’s the case, why hasn’t OpenAI said a word?
If there’s a roadmap, post it.
If it’s broken, admit it.
If you’re throttling features on paid plans with no communication, that’s not a bug—that’s a billing ethics issue.
i have been also having these issues lately, it is strange as i was working with no issues 1 or 2 weeks ago , then suddently it started and now i have to constantly try multiple uploads and sometimes give up entirely and resort to uploading in the chat instead of projects , glad to hear i am not alone in this , any information from support if this is being investigated?
Having this issue today myself. Strange thing, it worked…then it didnt work…then it worked again. Not it wont work at all.
Its frustrating, paying good money…
