Issue with negative API balance - July 2nd 2025

Yesterday I still used API normally. Every time the credit expired, there was only a negative number of 0.1 - 0.2$, but this time it was negative 73$, I checked and saw that the Credit grant item was deducted abnormally, I don’t know what this item means. Every day I use at most about 5$ and each time I use it, I top up to use it. Yesterday I created another project and now the API item has a negative number, quite unreasonable. Can anyone help me with this problem?

I am reminded of an issue that has happened before: a billing backend error that does not properly retrieve your account balance.

And then the recharge feature goes haywire, rapidly charging your card.

It doesn’t help that the actual “received” payment date is faked in that credit grant screen you show us. That could be you making regular payments throughout the month on many days, but you get false data now when viewing your info.

Hopefully this was you manually adding payments, and not that symptom rearing its head again, which is enough to remind all to never trust “recharge” again.

However, purchase of credits will not pay any outstanding balance, such as an account that was truly run negative. (Plus, your daily usage of about $5 would have to have been unstopped, not shut off, and unlimited by being negative for weeks to accumulate such a negative balance.)

So one can’t tell at all the usage and what you actually paid from the poor accounting interface.

However, to pay off a true negative balance (from overage before and without shutoff), you will need to go to monthly invoices, receive a monthly overage bill, and pay that amount directly in the user interface there with a separate card payment, not by purchasing credits.

Hopefully that is all it is - just looking in the wrong place to pay an outstanding “negative”, and not all those new credit purchases going nowhere uncredited.

(edit: that is not all it is - it is indeed a major platform issue that is ongoing hours later without resolution or official comment, affecting many accounts and indeed causing refresh charges against a payment method)

i have the same problem today: balance is suddenly negative (-$66). yesterday it was positive (+$5) and there was no usage at all.

Same issue with my -60 dollars balance is showing , there was no usage exceeded in past 2 days and I am seeing it fall from 17 dollars to -60 dollars

Hello we got the exact same issue, all the credits grants in June passed negative with no reasons.

Same issue here. credit balance went abnormally negative (-$8,807.62) with no usage

Can anyone contact Open Ai support? I emailed them but haven’t heard back yet? My work is pretty much affected!

I have posted on X. Kindly reshare and tag them.

After making an initial top-up of $48 including tax, my remaining balance of $37 dropped to just $1.50. So not only did I lose $35 from my existing balance, but I also lost the $40 (before tax) from the top-up itself.
I then made another top-up, and this time it worked correctly — but overall, I still lost $75 of credit.

,461.38, and auto recharge is turned off. (Captioned by AI)|546x341](upload://ofQINqMQaTB5Wccco32Bw1Q1ZRY.png)

We were preparing some services to go live and enable autocharges… Now it’s evident, that we will never do it… I can now imagine… I wake up one day… my business is out of operation, customers complaining, my business bank account is drained… what a shame… from company as great as OpenAI!

This is one of the worst case scenarios how AI could destroy the world in one day as we get more and more reliant on it.

Our auto-recharge was on, we only got one recharge done
According to the negative balance we got we should have more than 21 recharge done

It’s 100% an issue OpenAI side
