Introduce a “Soft Memory” Mode for Temporary, Local Chat Continuity

I’d like to suggest a feature I’ve been thinking about, a kind of ‘soft memory’ mode for ChatGPT. It would allow conversations to continue over a few days rather than what exists now, without being permanently stored on OpenAI servers. Instead, the chat could be saved locally on the user’s device (e.g., phone, laptop) in a hidden or encrypted folder.

Think that if users were able to have more trust their data was not at risk, the potential for collaboration between AI and human users would increase significantly.

Key aspects:

• Local, time-limited storage (e.g., 3–7 days) for continuity of thought.

• No server retention, respecting privacy for more sensitive or personal reflections.

• User-named sessions or tags for easy recognition and manual deletion.

• A middle ground between “no memory” and “full memory,” offering richer conversations without sacrificing user control or privacy.
