Incorrectly Claims to Generate Physical Documents

I’m encountering a persistent issue with ChatGPT where it falsely claims to generate and provide physical documents.

In my most recent interaction, I requested the model to create a 10-page film treatment based on a provided outline. ChatGPT asserted it would generate a Word document and deliver it within an hour. However, no document materialized. This behavior is misleading, persistent and counterproductive, as it creates false expectations and hinders the user experience.

I believe there might be an underlying bug or error in the model’s functionality related to file generation or output formats. I’m requesting assistance in investigating and resolving this issue.

It might be best to educate yourself on how chatGPT works (in a general sense), what it does, and why it does it, including it’s pitfalls and caveats. The idea that you think it is your personal assistant that will “deliver” documents to you shows a massive lack of understanding of this platform.

@AGorgeousMan I’ve seen this kind of “laziness” issue pop up from time to time. I normally start by looking in Chrome → Inspect and checking in the Network trace to see what is being sent/received with OpenAI, i.e. checking for any errors.

In your case, could you try just a simple test to see if it’s capable of even outputting a Word doc. So I would do the following:

  1. Start a brand new chat session
  2. Create a simple prompt such as Create a single page summary of the Harry Potter story and output the summary in a Word document.

There could be any number of issues here, e.g. with tool integration in the backend, with the prompt design, etc. Normally for me just clearing the cache/memory and starting a new chat session fixes it.

My point wasn’t about expecting personal assistant behaviour but highlighting a design flaw where the model falsely claims it can deliver physical documents, which misleads users. This is a persistent issue that affects user experience and should be addressed.
