I’m encountering a persistent bug where 16 images remain in my image library, even though I’ve deleted all chats across all devices. I’ve tested this on iOS, iPad, and PC (Edge browser), performed full app reinstalls, and cleared everything — but the issue persists.
It looks like a server-side desynchronization, where image references are not being cleared correctly from my account. I’ve contacted support but haven’t received a response, so I’m posting here to see if someone from OpenAI can help escalate this.
Here are all the details:
I’ve tried the following steps with no success:
• Manual deletion of all existing chats.
• Logged out and performed a full reinstall of the app (iOS updated to the latest version).
• Tested across multiple devices (iPad and PC using Microsoft Edge).
• Created new chats, deleted them again, and cleared local app data.
The issue persists, which strongly suggests a server-side synchronization error, possibly involving residual metadata from images that should no longer exist.
As a professional who also manages client accounts, I value efficient support with technical depth. Therefore, I kindly request that this ticket be escalated to a team with backend access, as this issue clearly cannot be resolved on the user side.
“Thank you for responding to my help message, I really appreciate it. I’ve done some research and it seems that the only thing left is for a direct deletion interface to be created. Apparently, they are working on that solution.”
“Now, we understand that this may not be a very serious issue, but we know that many people are experiencing the same problem. OpenAI team, you have a great company and all the capabilities to help us. We are simply hoping for a solution or the creation of a direct interface that allows us, the users, to have a better experience. We appreciate your support.”
Tried everything also Problem still here … Phantom Images very annoying also noticed Chat GPT is retaining Data memory even when everything is deleted. HOW???
Most likely meta data remnants. I’ve deleted dozens of archived chats and have over 1200 ghosts. It’s apparently not an urgent enough issue for OpenAI to fix it. There’s like three or four posts here about the same thing.
I’m pleased to share some great news regarding a visual detail that has been under close observation for several months: the numeric counter that used to appear next to the “Library” section for images has now been removed from the ChatGPT interface.
This update, which appears to be part of recent UI enhancements, contributes to a cleaner and less distracting user experience. As a user, I had been relying on a custom browser extension to hide this counter, as it often caused visual confusion when it didn’t accurately reflect the actual image content.
With this change, the counter has been completely removed from the DOM, allowing for a more polished experience without any additional user-side intervention.
I sincerely thank the development team for implementing this improvement and for listening to the community—even when it comes to seemingly minor details that significantly enhance usability.
I’m still hopeful for future updates—such as the ability to organize images using folders, tags, or direct deletion—but for now, this is a small yet meaningful victory worth celebrating.
