Feature Proposal: Affordable 24-Hour ChatGPT Student Pass
I would like to suggest a pricing option specifically designed for college students.
Many students need advanced AI capabilities only when they have an assignment, college project, coding task, exam preparation, presentation, or deadline. They may not be able to afford or justify paying for a full monthly premium subscription when they only need intensive access for a short period.
Proposed idea
Introduce a 24-hour Student Pass that provides access to advanced ChatGPT capabilities for one day at a very low price.
For example:
-
₹49 — Student Starter Pass
-
₹79/₹99 — Student Project Day Pass
-
₹149 — High-Usage Student Pass
The exact pricing and usage limits could be determined by OpenAI based on its inference costs.
Instead of advertising a specific number of tokens, the product could provide a defined amount of high-level usage, because most students don’t understand token economics. The interface could simply say something like:
“Get everything you need to finish your project today.”
Why this could benefit students
Students often have short periods of extremely high AI usage:
-
College projects
-
Programming assignments
-
Final-year projects
-
Exam preparation
-
Research and reports
-
PPT/document creation
-
Debugging code
-
Hackathons
-
Last-minute submissions
A student who needs ChatGPT heavily for one day may not want to purchase an entire month’s subscription.
Why this could benefit OpenAI
This could potentially reach students who currently don’t subscribe at all.
Instead of:
Student doesn’t buy → OpenAI earns ₹0
the model could become:
Student needs ChatGPT for one day → Student pays a small amount → OpenAI earns revenue → Student gets access when they need it
Usage limits could be carefully designed to prevent abuse and ensure that the economics remain sustainable.
For example, OpenAI could use different tiers:
Student Day Pass
24-hour access with moderate usage
Student Project Pass
Higher limits for coding, files, reasoning and project work
Student Power Pass
Very high usage for students working intensively for a day
The main idea
I am not suggesting that premium subscriptions should be replaced.
Instead, I think ChatGPT could offer a “pay when you need it” option alongside monthly subscriptions.
For college students especially, a low-cost one-day option could make advanced AI much more accessible while potentially creating a new revenue stream for OpenAI.
I believe this would be particularly useful in countries such as India, where many college students are highly interested in AI but may find recurring premium subscriptions difficult to justify.
