How to switch to European data residency with new Project?

I want to switch to European data residency as announced by Open AI here four days ago https://openai.com/index/introducing-data-residency-in-europe/.

They say: " Eligible customers can enable European data residency by creating a new Project(opens in a new window) in the API Platform dashboard and selecting Europe as the region."

If I create a new project I cannot switch or choose the European data residency. It’s unclear why I am not able to or where I should be able to do this.

I’m on “Usage tier 5”.

Already searched this forum. Sadly the ‘Help’ link in their announcement also misses any detail about switching to European data residency.

I guess this is something offered for special business partners.

There is a link hidden in that article.

There are actually more links at the bottom of the page. This one is off particular interest for API users:

Which customers can enable European Data Residency when using the API?

OpenAI customers that have an Enterprise agreement and that are eligible for Zero Data Retention can enable European Data Residency.

I recently got an update from staff about it. It’s essentially the same information but over time access should be more really available to all.

Thank you! Guess I missed that.

If you really need that because of regulatory constraints: Azure also has OpenAI models.
And you can deploy in multiple locations in Europe. It also has way better API speed.
The API works not much different.
And you can ask o3-mini how to implement it.

This point is not clear to me. What does “eligible customers” mean exactly? It means that “Team Business” customers cannot access this feature, but only Enterprise customers… and from what I understand not even everyone. Is that so?

Yes, it is not for everyone. I assume someone has to manually create deployments for that. And there are most probably thousands of companies interested that wouldn’t even spend a million on the API…

My colleagues and I tried to get in touch with OpenAI’s sales but never a response. Since the topic is pretty delicate for the European business, at least a polite reply would be much appreciated.

There is always Azure which allows to deploy OpenAI models on european servers.

Obviously. But Azure is too slow in releasing new models or rolling out new models versions.

Well, there hasn’t been any new announcement regarding bringing this out for the general public at the moment.
You tried by contacting sales. Now you have to wait obviously.
