GPT-4 is not available in Playground and API usage

Hello Everybody!

Do you have the same problem? I’ve bought ChatGPT Plus on several accounts to try to use it but neither is working via Playground. I don’t even have any option like GPT-4, only bunch of GPT-3,5

Therefore when I am trying to use GPT-4 via my Python code, I permanently get the error: openai.error.InvalidRequestError: The model gpt-4 does not exist or you do not have access to it. Learn more: link

But API is correct, all limits are Okay. I don’t know what’s the problem :frowning:

Welcome to the forum!

All developers will be getting access to the GPT-4 API soon, some already have it and the rest are gaining access as capacity becomes available, it will be automatic, there is nothing you have to do.

thank you for answering… I hate to wait for unknown period of time :frowning:

Thank you for this information. If you don’t mind there there are two points I’m still unclear about. I’ve tried to search for the answers here and elsewhere but found conflicting or incomplete information, so I’m hoping to ask your input you since it seems you are knowledgable about this topic.

  1. Is there a specific definition for “developer” in this context? Or perhaps the easier question if the answer is yes: If I have an API key(s), am I a developer?
  2. Does the $1 minimum apply to this latest rollout? I’m subscribed to the $20 USD/mo ChatGPT Plus plan but my billing history is still $0. If the $1 minimum is still a requirement, is there a way to just send a payment now?
I’d greatly appreciate any input you have to offer and thank you for your time. Cheers!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

There is no specific definition of “developer”, you could class it as someone who uses the API.

I am not aware of any minimum requirement, but it would stand to reason that you need to have at least experimented with the API.

On a more general note, I am seeing lots of users start to say they have now gained GPT-4 API access so I know the rollout is happening, it’s a balancing act between available compute and a performant service and the millions of new developers wishing to try the new model.

Notice all the options in all the drop boxes.

That said, also realize you need to be subscribed to openais API. (im pretty sure)

GPT costs money, granted 3.5 turbo vastly cheaper than 4.0, nevertheless… You need to have your card on that account before using GPT4.

To give you some context: I have plugin access, but not GPT-4 32k access.

Which is, from my perspective, ironic.

But rest assured, they will give you access when they deem it profitable.
Which is… When you buy tokens on the openai API account.

I really want to pay for GPT-4 API
but i can’t since im an not having this option in my playground

I experiment a lot with GPT-3.5, but I am having only 0,18$ of spend.

I’d like to pay 1$ to start using GPT-4 and finally using the money i want to pay

and

On July 6, 2023 , we gave access to the GPT-4 API (8k) to all API users who have made a successful payment of $1 or more. We plan to open up access to all developers soon, and then start raising rate-limits after that depending on compute availability.

how can i make the successful payment of $1 or more? Do i need to wait the whole month?

So you are saying that even if i would have more then $1 in usage of API, It still won’t help me toget GPT-4?

No, I’m saying that access to the GPT-4 API is open to new developers and is being rolled out as capacity becomes available.

okay then no need to push the usage limits
thank you for answering…

So, I need to open an new account and dump my old account with a subscription to get access to gpt 4. sound very dumb…why can I just buy the $1, $5 or whatever upfront as tokens and get access??

You could completely remove your payment plan from your account. Then you’ll only be able to buy prepaid credits, a minimum $5, (turning on gpt-4) – and not be able to go back to the convenience of monthly billing.

You also have a chance that you hit a bug in switching, as some have encountered, and have problems with starting the new plan.
