Frequent Auto-Refresh on ChatGPT Web: Losing Prompts Across Tabs

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a frustrating issue on the ChatGPT web version (not the app):

• All open tabs with ChatGPT refresh at the same time, frequently and seemingly without reason.

• This often happens while I’m in the middle of writing a prompt, causing the prompt to be completely lost.

• It occurs regardless of whether the tabs are active or idle, and it’s been happening quite often.

Some details:

• This issue doesn’t happen on the app, only on the web version.

• I’ve tried limiting the number of tabs, disabling browser extensions, and adjusting settings in Chrome, but the problem persists.

Has anyone else encountered this? Are there any solutions to stop the auto-refresh or at least save the written prompts before it happens? It’s really disrupting my workflow, and any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your insights

There seems to be an infrequent issue at OpenAI. Sometimes, it is stable and works as it should, but other times, it keeps refreshing all the time, and it is impossible to get anything done.

I am experiencing the same.

Yes, it’s very annoying. It can be stable for hours, even days, and then suddenly, all ChatGPT tabs enter a continuous refreshing spree.

And now that OpenAI has introduced Projects, I cannot “escape” to my macOS ChatGPT app either since it is only supported on the web app and iPad app.

Hmm. I just encountered a Bad Gateway (502) error during the constant reloading issue. Could this point to routing instability or an issue with the server-side infrastructure? I live in Norway—wondering if this might be regional or if anyone else has experienced something similar.

I am having the same problem - I am in the UK. Sometimes it works fine, but more and more frequently it is completely unusable.

Yeh, right now it is just impossible. Very frustrating.

Not worth $20/month

Cindy and Hayley, do you notice an improvement when to use a different browser?

I normally use Chrome, which lately has been just horrible. Even when I update to latest version, clear all chatgpt cookies.

But it works perfectly with Safari on my mac!

I’ve been finding this problem, too - only just sarted happening a few days ago. Glad to hear its not just me.

I’ve found the desktop app is working fine, but also in chrome in an incognito window, which makes me wonder if one of my chrome extensions is causing the problem.

Next steps will be to disable my extensions one by one and see how that goes

Yes, I just found that ChatGPT is stable in incognito mode, and keeps refreshing otherwise.

I hope you find the extension! :star_struck:

I found the sinner!

I’ve been using Echoes for ChatGPT to search for past conversations, which is not approaching 3000.

However, the introduction of “Projects” broke the extension, so there are a few conversations that it is not possible to download. It keeps trying, causing a refresh.

Interesting - I’m an echoes user, too! I hadn’t started looking in earnest yet, so does sound like this might just be it. Nice find!
