Hi everyone,
After spending some time trying to navigate and post in the OpenAI Developer Community, I wanted to offer some feedback about the forum’s information architecture and overall wayfinding.
The central issue for me is this:
Search should complement navigation, not replace it.
The forum seems to rely heavily on users searching for what they need, searching for similar existing discussions, and understanding categories, tags, and posting conventions without providing enough visible hierarchical structure.
For some people, that may work extremely well.
For others, it creates a surprising amount of cognitive friction.
Different people navigate information differently
People do not all organize or retrieve information in the same way.
Some people are naturally comfortable with a search-first workflow:
- Think of the right keywords.
- Search.
- Scan the results.
- Refine the query.
- Determine where something belongs.
Other people rely much more heavily on visible structure and spatial hierarchy.
We need to be able to see:
- where we are,
- what the major areas are,
- what belongs underneath them,
- and how different parts of the community relate to one another.
Neither approach is inherently better.
The problem arises when software effectively assumes:
“This is how we expect you to navigate. Adapt yourself to it.”
A mature community platform should support multiple ways of finding and organizing information.
That is not merely customization. It is also a cognitive accessibility issue.
Hierarchical navigation externalizes cognitive work
For someone who thinks hierarchically, a structure like this is immediately understandable:
