File Upload Limit (User Quota) Is Breaking My Workflow – Heavy User Needs File Management Options!

Hi OpenAI Team,

I’m writing this out of deep frustration and as a devoted power user of ChatGPT. The current file upload quota system (user quota limit) is actively breaking my workflows and crippling the functionality of what is otherwise an extraordinary tool.

Let me explain my situation clearly:

Context:

I use ChatGPT at a professional for my own business, creative, and strategic level across (almost connected 24/7:

  • Technical research
  • Writing a fantasy novel with world-building references
  • Uploading screenshots, logs, documents, and screenshots for iterative tasks
  • AI-assisted project management, coding, cybersecurity, and brand development
  • Cross-referencing files between sessions and across disciplines

I frequently attach:

  • PDFs
  • DOCX chapters
  • Images (diagrams, screenshots, UI wireframes)
  • Excel/CSV files with structured data
  • Markdown or plain text files for prompt injection and instructions
  • Among many many more.

The Problem:

Every time I reach a certain upload limit, without warning or file size clarity. I get vague or blocking messages saying I’ve hit my user quota. Suddenly, I can’t upload anything anymore. This disrupts everything I’m trying to do, because my use depends on an iterative file-based workflow.

I don’t know what quota I’ve reached.Don’t know where to look or what to delete.

I don’t know what chat specifically or file to delete.

The experience becomes:

  • Confusing: There’s no visible storage dashboard, no file manager, no quota meter.
  • Frustrating: I try deleting chats (files) manually, but nothing changes or improves.
  • Destructive: It stalls important projects and breaks the “reference” functionality ChatGPT is amazing at when files are involved.
  • Paralyzing: I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore. And I need this tool to function at full capacity.

Feature Request / Plea:

Please consider implementing one or more of the following solutions as soon as possible:

  1. Visible File Quota Management Panel
    Let users see:
  • Total file space used
  • List of uploaded files (across chats)
  • Ability to delete, rename, or manage files
This would be a game changer for usability.
  1. Prompted Warnings or Auto-Cleanup Suggestions
When the limit is near, show a message like:
“You’re using 90% of your file quota. Consider deleting older files or unused references here.”
  2. Custom Storage Plans for Power Users
I would absolutely pay for increased storage or quota… just give us that option!
  3. Tag-Based File Organization / Session Scope
Allow files to be session-specific or tagged for cleanup (e.g., “temp”, “permanent”, “reference”).

Final Thoughts:

Please… I love this tool. I rely on it for real, high-impact work and creativity. But right now, I’m stuck. The current quota system without visibility or management options is killing the core value I depend on.

If any team member sees this, or if someone has an official workaround or way to reset the quota or view what’s eating it up…. please reply.

With all respect and urgency,

A daily, multi-field power user of ChatGPT

Thank you in advance.
