Problem
Long-running ChatGPT conversations naturally evolve into multiple subjects. A conversation may begin with one topic, branch into another, and eventually contain several substantial discussions that would be more useful as separate chats.
Currently, users have no easy way to reorganize those discussions afterward.
Proposed Feature: Conversation Management
Allow users to select a range of messages inside an existing ChatGPT conversation and:
1. Move to New Chat β Remove the selected messages from the original conversation and create a new conversation containing them.
2. Copy to New Chat β Create a new conversation from the selected messages while preserving them in the original.
3. Move to Existing Chat β Transfer selected messages into another existing conversation.
4. Split Chat Here β Select a point in a conversation and turn everything after that point into a new conversation.
5. Merge Chats β Combine related conversations while preserving chronology and conversational context.
AI-Assisted Topic Detection
ChatGPT could also recognize when a conversation has substantially changed subjects and offer to create a new chat:
βIt looks like this conversation has moved into a new topic. Would you like to split this into a new chat?β
The user should always decide whether the split occurs.
Why This Would Be Useful
This would be especially valuable for people using ChatGPT for long-running creative projects, writing, research, coding, project management, and conversations that span multiple devices.
Instead of treating conversations as permanent linear transcripts, ChatGPT could allow users to organize them more like documents or branches of thought.
It would make ChatGPT significantly easier to use as a long-term workspace while keeping conversations focused and organized.
