ETA: Edited to Add — I realized another essential feature that would pair well with Cut & Move: Merge Chats. Sometimes, I accidentally start a new chat when I meant to continue an existing one—this is probably common for new users, group discussions, or project-based chats where there’s only one main thread. A Merge Chats option would allow users to seamlessly combine related conversations into one thread, keeping all messages intact in order. This would be a huge time-saver and help keep discussions organized without needing to manually copy and paste between chats.
When using ChatGPT for ongoing discussions, sometimes the conversation goes off-topic—either by accident or because it naturally shifts. While ChatGPT does a great job of tying things back to the main subject, some parts of the conversation just don’t belong in that thread.
For example:
If I’m working on writing a book, but then I start sharing a personal story (like my child support experience), I don’t want to lose that story—but I also don’t want it cluttering up my book discussion.
Right now, I can copy and paste, but that only duplicates it. There’s no way to cut and move a section while deleting it from the original conversation.
Suggested Feature: Cut-and-Paste Options
When selecting text, users should have the option to:
Cut & Move the selected section to another chat
Delete the selected section entirely (if it’s no longer needed)
Move it to a new chat (starting fresh with that section)
Move it to an existing chat (keeping everything organized)
Archive the selected text for later use
Where This Feature Should Appear:
The long-press menu—this is the menu that appears when a user holds down on a message in chat. It currently includes options like:
Copy
Select Text
Good Response
Bad Response
Read Aloud
Search the Web
Regenerate Response
Change Model
The smaller menu after selecting text—this is the menu that appears after using “Select Text” from the long-press menu. Right now, it only offers “Copy” and “Select All”, but should include options for Cut, Move, Delete, and Archive as well.
Current Limitation:
Right now, selecting text only allows for copying or selecting all—there is no way to cut a section and move it elsewhere without manually pasting it and deleting it afterward.
Final Thoughts:
I came across a similar request called “Auto-Sorting of Chat Messages,” which asks for AI to automatically categorize messages into different chats in real time. While that would be a great advanced feature, my request is for a manual tool that allows users to cut and move specific sections of a chat after the conversation happens—giving them more control over how their chats are managed.
This approach is also more user-friendly, since most people already use cut, copy, and paste functions across multiple platforms, such as social media, messaging apps, and document editors. Implementing manual chat management first would make the transition to automated sorting smoother for users.
Personally, I would use this feature regularly while looking forward to the automation of these functions in future upgrades. You can count on me to make that transition when the time comes.
