Title:
Feature Request: Real-Time Awareness and Elapsed Time Between ChatGPT Messages
One brief sentence:
Please add optional real-time clock awareness so ChatGPT can know the current date, time, and elapsed time between messages.
Message:
Dear OpenAI Team,
I am a paid ChatGPT Plus subscriber, and I would like to propose what I believe is one of the most valuable improvements that could be added to ChatGPT.
The Problem
Today, ChatGPT can tell me:
“Come back in three hours.”
However, when I return, ChatGPT has no way of knowing whether three minutes, three hours, or three days have actually passed.
This breaks conversation continuity and reduces the quality of long-term discussions for journalists, researchers, writers, programmers, project managers, and professional users.
Proposed Solutions
Please consider implementing one or more of the following:
- Display the real date and time beside every message.
- Allow ChatGPT to access the device’s clock only after explicit user permission.
- Add a setting called “Use Real-Time Clock.”
- Allow ChatGPT to calculate the elapsed time since the previous message.
- Add an optional Professional Mode that automatically displays timing information at the beginning of every response.
Example
Instead of starting a reply without any time awareness, ChatGPT could display something like this:
────────────────────────────────────────────
📅 Date: Saturday, July 25, 2026
🕒 Time: 2:41 PM
📆 Day: Saturday
⏳ Elapsed since previous message: 3 hours 12 minutes
────────────────────────────────────────────
Then continue with the normal reply.
Example:
────────────────────────────────────────────
📅 Date: Saturday, July 25, 2026
🕒 Time: 2:41 PM
📆 Day: Saturday
⏳ Elapsed since previous message: 3 hours 12 minutes
────────────────────────────────────────────
Welcome back!
More than three hours have passed since your previous message, so we can now continue from where we left off...
Benefits
This feature would allow ChatGPT to correctly understand conversations such as:
- “Come back in three hours.”
- “Continue tomorrow.”
- “Remind me later today.”
- “How long has it been?”
- “We discussed this yesterday.”
It would dramatically improve:
- Journalism
- Research
- Programming
- Project management
- Writing
- Long-running conversations
- Personal productivity
Privacy
This feature should be completely optional.
Users who prefer maximum privacy can simply leave it disabled.
Those who enable it would allow ChatGPT to read only the current device time—not location, contacts, photos, or any other personal information.
Final Request
If this feature is already under development, please let the community know.
If possible, sharing an estimated timeframe would also be greatly appreciated.
I truly believe this would become one of ChatGPT’s most appreciated professional features.
Most AI assistants still cannot maintain real-time conversation continuity.
OpenAI has an opportunity to lead the industry by implementing this correctly.
As a loyal ChatGPT Plus subscriber, I respectfully say that this feature is important enough to influence whether I continue my subscription.
It is not a luxury feature.
It is a practical improvement that could benefit millions of users worldwide.
Thank you for your time and for considering this proposal.
