Dear OpenAI Team,
I hope you’re doing well. I’d like to suggest a simple yet impactful feature that could significantly improve ChatGPT’s practicality—real-time system clock access.
Currently, ChatGPT cannot provide the current time, which limits its usefulness in many real-world applications. If the model had access to a basic system clock (even without internet sync), it could enhance conversations in multiple ways:
Why This Feature Matters:
- Accurate Time Responses:
When users ask, “What time is it?”, ChatGPT currently cannot answer. A simple system time check could solve this.
- Practical Real-World Applications:
Users could ask, “It’s 4:30 PM now; should I take my medicine?” and ChatGPT could provide context-aware suggestions.
For coaching, travel planning, and scheduling, knowing the real-time context would make ChatGPT much more efficient.
- More Natural Conversations:
AI responses would feel more human-like if it could refer to the actual time instead of saying, “I don’t have access to time.”
Privacy Considerations:
This could be an optional, opt-in feature, where users allow ChatGPT to access the system time only when needed.
I believe this small enhancement would bring a significant usability boost, making ChatGPT more competitive with AI models that may introduce this feature soon. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!
Best regards,
Kasif khan
Yes please. ChatGPT only has access to the system time of the server but has it doesn’t run on the same server all the time and most servers have wrong time server, ChatGPT use the wrong time most of the time. Sure you can prompt “use internet to find what’s the actual time” but it won’t use this time after the prompt.
I know this is really simple, but I would like to back this request. Having a clock helps ChatGPT help me schedule and maintain bed times, wake times, etc…
It should be optional to turn on and off.
It should not:
- Confuse the user
- Ask about the duration between replies (unless asked to
- Feel like a privacy concern (it won’t if user gives it permission that can be revoked at any time)
Thank you devs for looking at this. It would be a helpful addition in the tool belt.
A followup from the app itself to help explain my situation better!
I would like to bump this one up.
To add to what others have already stated, time-sensitive conversations require the user to manually state the current time or time zone. Direct access to the local system clock would improve accuracy for:
-
time-sensitive guidance
-
reminders and scheduling context
-
workout timing, cooking timing, and live step-by-step tasks
-
reducing misunderstandings around “now,” “today,” and “in 15 minutes”
Suggested safeguards:
-
opt-in only
-
clearly labeled permission prompt
-
easy revoke in settings
-
limited to local date/time and time zone only
-
no access to broader device telemetry
Example use case:
A user says, “I’m starting my Zone 2 ride now,” or “I put the chili on at 6:12 PM.” ChatGPT could anchor guidance to the actual current local time without requiring the user to restate it manually.
